At the invitation of Congressman Greg Carman,
the Bethpage High School Band performed
on the steps of the United States Capitol in Washington,
D.C. on May 1. The band members were
accompanied by the Golden Girls of the Kickline,
the Precision Flag Corps, and Goldie, the eagle
mascot of the school, under the supervision of
Mr. Fredric Cohen of the Music Department.
Before an audience of tourists, government
workers, and parents of Bethpage students, the
band played a series of patriotic renditions such
as the Battle Hymn of the Republic, the American
Salute and several Sousa marches. The
Kickline and the Flag Corps, performed several
routines for the remaining nine songs.
The performance at the Capitol was the first
phase of the band's trip to Washington, D.C. For
the remainder of the three days of the trip, which
commenced on Friday, April 30, the student
members of the Music Department went on a
tour of the Capitol, Arlington Cemetery, the
Smithsonian Institute and a boat trip up the Po-tomic
River. A major attraction for all was the
giant pandas in the National Zoo. All the students
with Mr. Cohen and four dedicated chaperones,
Ms. Tullo, Ms. Conrad, Mrs. McFadden, and Mr.
Beck lodged at the National 4H Center during the
three days.
The trip was the first of many activties
planned by the band members. Mr. Cohen
remarked that the exemplary behavior of the
students and the excellence of their musical, performance
conveyed a fine impression of the
Bethpage High School student.
