You've Come A Long Way
New York Telephone operator Florence Schall
of Bethpage takes a break from her computerized
directory assistance equipment to examine
an antique cord board used by her predecessors
back in the 1920's. Similar displays of telephone
memorabilia will highlight Operator Recognition
Week 1982 which runs from June 21-26 in
honor of New York Telephone's 11,000 Operators
who handle over a billion calls each year. During
the roaring '20's, calling for directory assistance
was a time consuming event since operators had
to look up numbers manually in printed telephone
directories. Today, using the latest state
of the art equipment, it takes less than 30 seconds

On Long Island, some 600 operators handle
directory assistance information while an additional
600 put through local and long distance

The rain and poor field conditions Saturday did
not dampen, the spirits or desire of the team as
they beat Bayshore 2-1, Hicksville 2-0 and played
to a scoreless tie with Brentwood late in the
afternoon.
Sunday did not prove as rewarding. St. Martin
suffered 2 defeats. One by E. Islip 2-0, the other 4-
0 to the W. Islip team. Nevertheless, it was a fine
effort and all of Bethpage is proud.
Denise Politano was not able to play due to an
injury before game time.
Bethpage High School senior, Ann Schiavetta,
was honored last week at a luncheon given by
LILCO. Ann was one of the four winners (2 girls,
2 boys) of the LILCO Student-Athlete Scholarship
