Undefeated Champions
The chants of "Undefeated Champions", and "We're No. 1", can be
heard in the hails of the Bethpage school system. Proud of their accomplishments,
and with good reason, or reasons. This is the first time in 12
years of existence that a boys Bethpage Junior Varsity swim team has
compiled an undefeated record. (The J.V. girls team have been undefeated
for 6 consecutive years).
One reason for success this season was the addition of more freshman
to the squad. In years past 9th graders automatically moved up to varsity,
often times only to sit on the bench. This year the J.V. team started
two weeks earlier than the varsity, so Mr. Forrest, the boys varsjty
coach, agreed that all the freshman would compete on the J.V. team until
just before midway through the season. At that point only two boys, Mike
Mulcahy and Ken Stafford were moved up to varsity, leaving nine other
freshman. (Chris Brown, Bill Burleson, Frank Caputo, Keith Dodd, Jim
Giannico, Ed Lauritsen, Sal Morande, Ron Paola, and Scott Rutkowski).
Their extra size, strength, and experience helped the team go all the way.
Another good reason the team made it to the top this year was due to the
extraordinary talent of George Dikeman, an 8th grader. George broke
every individual swimming record this season, and has placed first in
every individual event in the last 2 years. He also swam on the record
breaking 200 yd. freestyle relay, the fastest J.V. relay in Nassau County.
Never before has any Bethpage swimmer, boy or girl, J.V. or Varsity,
achieved such success. There is no doubt that George will be one of the
most feared and sought after competitors in Nassau County in the next
couple of years.
Combine1 these reasons with the experience of Tim Mooney, Wayne
Costigan, Mike Laraia, Bob Justinano, and the fresh new talent of Carl
Ohsberg, Sal LaBarca, Mike Shaw, Billy Dion, John Hensler, Paul Gran-aroli,
Mike Gavilan, EricJUcantor^and you getgH AM P10 N S! I!
