Bipartisan
Cleanup Bill
Hicksville and Bethpage area residents gained a legislative
victory this month in a five-month campaign to win strong
national environmental cleanup legislation.
Members of the: New York Community Action Network
(New York CAN) in Nassau County's Fourth Congressional .
District have been campaigning since January for a federal
Superfuhd cleanup reauthorization bill. The group's efforts
have focused on Representative Norman F. Lent, and on
May 10, Mr. Lent announced that he and Representative
James Florio of New Jersey had introduced HR-5640, a new
bipartisan Superfund bill which would include several significant
improvements in the cleanup program.
"We are very encouraged by the introduction of the bipartisan
HR-5640 bill," said William Steinmetz of Bethpage,
Chair of the New York CAN Nassau County Toxics Committee.
"And we intend to press for passage of this bill
without any further weakening amendments or exemptions."
The HR-5640 bill collects a total of $ 10.25 billion over five
years, carries a mandatory cleanup timetable provision, contains
some victims's compensation provisions, including the
right of individuals to sue polluters in federal court, and

Assemblyman Fred Parola presents to Celeste
Merzon, Island Trees S-.A.DP. (Students
Against Driving Drunk) Advisor, a Legislative
Resolution which proclaimed the week of May
6th as Student Awareness of Drunk Driving
Week by the New York State Assembly.
The Assemblyman praised the efforts of the
dedicated students and their advisor noting that
drunk driving will be eliminated through a conscientious
commitment and not through tougher
legislation and penalties against the drunk driver
alone.

Hempstead Presiding Supervisor Thomas S.
Gulotta has entered into an agreement with
Edmonton, Canada, Mayor Laurence Decore
under which the home of the 1983-1984 Stanley
Cup Winner would receive a product indigenous
to the home of the losing team. The playoff finals
will feature the New York Islanders against the
Edmonton Oilers, and the Islanders play their*
home games at the Nassau Veterans Memorial
Coliseum, in Hempstead Town (Uniondale).
Under the terms of the agreement, an Islander
victory in the finals would require the city of
Edmonton to ship a 400 ppund calf to Hempstead!
An Islander loss would result in the shipment
of several dozen famed Long Island Ducklings
to Edmonton. (Supplied courtesy of Joe

Supervisor Gulotta noted, "After four consecutive
and successive Stanley Cup wins, I feel it is
unlikely--that bur feathered'friiends will have to
journey northwestward. In fact, we are already
preparing signs which state "Here's the Beef...".
Of course, our agreement is done in the spirit of
fun and good sportsmanship, and I know both
Mayor Decore and I are extremely proud of our
respective hockey teams, which are having fine
seasons!!"
As an additional gesture of good will and
diplomacy, Gulotta has extended an invitation
for Mayor Decore to visit Hempstead Town and,
concurrently, view one of the Islander Playoff
Games. "We hope that Mayor Decore can find the
time to join us in Hempstead, and see, first-hand,
the tremendous support the Islanders receive
from their fans."
Edmonton and the Islanders tangled in the
playoffs last year, and the Islanders won in four
