the finish line.
3, as the weatherman cooperated
to help make the
Bethpage event one of the*
best on this year's road racing
calendar. O'Connor

Bethpage High School track
in 26 minutes, 10 seconds,
only nine seconds of the
coiirse record of 26:01 set by
John McCorry last year.

was second in 26:27, and
Long Island Masters' champion
Herb Kahl of Bohemia

age group.
Continuous music provided
by strategically placed
Bethpage school bands prot
vided inspiration for the
runners as they sped
through the streets of Bethpage
on a beautiful sunny
morning. Race Directors Ed
and Sunny Fishkind, Steve
Shushanand Maureen Buck
did a fine job of coordinating
the race once again this
year, with technical assistance
from David Katz and
his crew from Finish Line
Promotions.
Special thanks to go
Campagne Trucking, without
whose most generous
support the Tune-A-Thon
would not be possible. Other
race, sponsors included
Woodbury Super Star
Sneakers and Sports, ABC
Sports, and C&C Cola. Proceeds
of the race went to
Moms and Dads for Music
in support of the Bethpage
High School District Music
Programs.
Plans are already underway
for an even bigger and
better 4th annual Bethpage
Tuna-A-Thon in June of
1985!
At the starting line on Cherry Avenue, seconds before the starting gun.
Soviets Won't Play
With opening ceremonies
only 10 days away, the
Soviet Union has withdrawn
from the 1984 International
Garhes for the Disabled,
scheduled to be held this
month in Nassau County.
Games Director Michael
Mushett received a Mail-gram
from Moscow yeter-day
saying that the "USSR
blind athletes will not participate
in the 1984 Games for
the disabled on Long Island.
Please refund entry fee.^'
No reason was given for
the pjullout, which follows
the Soviet Union's decision
not to participate in the 1984
Summer Olympics in Los
Angeles.
At the time the Soviets
announced their boycott of
the 1984 Summer Olympics
in Los Angeles, they said
they still intended to participate
in the disabled games,
to be held in Mitchel Field
and the Nassau Coliseum
"beginning on June 16.
The turnaround came after
top Soviet officials became
aware that a team was being
sent to the Games.
The Soviets had planned to
send a team of 18 blind athletes
and 10 staff members.
The athletes were expected
to participate in track and
field and swimming.
"They are a fine team of
blind athletes and they must
be tremendously disappointed",
said Mushett.
1,800 athletes from 55 countries,
including four Warsaw
Pact nations—Hungary,
Yugoslavia, Poland and
East Germany—still were
expected to participate in
the Games.
It will mark the first time
that the Games have been
held on American soil and
the third time they have been
Staged.
Nassau County Executive
Francis Purcell said: "I
regret the Soviet official"
will not give these people an
opportunity to experience
international competition
but insist on putting politics
before the needs of the
disabled."

Oa Sunday, June 3rd, the Parishioners of St.
Martin of Tours Church learned that Father
Eugene McManus is being transferred to St.
Joseph's Church in Hewlett, effective June 13,
1984.
Father Gene has served St. Martin's and Bethpage
for 13 years and in that time has touched
many people. This town has become accustomed
not only to his face, but to his goodness, his
kindness, his holiness. He will be sorely missed by
the whole community.
There will be a reception for Father Gene on
Sunday, June 10, 1984 from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00
P.M. in St..Martin's School Cafeteria, when all
parishioners and friends can wish him God Bless
and Godspeed.
St. Joseph's gain is truly our loss.
