Latest Laser Unit At Central
General Hosp.
Robert Bornstcin,. Administrator pi Central General
Hospital, Plainview. has announced that the hospital has
acquired a Sharplan 734 CO- Surigical Laser Unit and has
already dedicated an operating suite lor its use.
Bornslein said, "This new Laser surigical innovation,
which incorporates the latest state ol the art space age technology
in its lield, is the lirst ol its kind ever to be delivered
and installed in any hospital in the metropblitaii New York
area-. .?:"::,...< •• '•'''•
Current plans lor the $70,000 Sharplan Laser's use at
Central General include the Otolaryngology, (ENT) Neurosurgery.
Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery and Plastic &
Demotology. .
1 he new operating room Laser develops a powcrlul, invisible
beam ol energy which can be used with great precision as
a cutting tool and to vaporize disease tissue. Bleeding is kept
to a minimum since the Laser seals small blood vessels as it
cuts, while sterilizing adjacent tissue. When desired, the
Laser is capable or removing as little as a single layer ol cells
measuring no more than I / 25,000th plan inch and surgeons
claim that the Laser allpws them tp spare mpre adjacent
healthy tissue next to a diseased site than is ppssible with
cpnventipnal techniques. Laser energy is generated within a
mpvabic llopr mpuntcd cpnsole and delivered tp the ppera-tive
site by an pverhead articulated arm Ipoking much like
the pne used in ypur dentists pHice. The Laser beam is
transmitted thrpugh a small handpiece which the surgcpn
can use Ireehand during Macrpsurgery. In certain cases
where greater precisipn is required, the Laser is connected to
an pperating rppm micrpscppe lor Microsurgery with the
surgeon conirpUjng the action ot the Laser through a small
lever.
In locus. Laser energy spot sizes as small as a tenth ola
millimeter can be used lor precise cutting. As the Laser
locups is changed, the selection ol>lower power allows coagulation
ol tissue.and small blood vessels while the use ol
higher power can result in the complete vaporization ol large
amounts or diseased tissue. This is particularly usetul in the
removalol tumors in dilticult-to-reach areas and the Laser
has increased the operable range olsuch patients conditions.
The new Laser at Central General Hopital is one ol
approximately live-hundred units delivered to the North
American Continent by Laser Industries olTel Aviv, Israel,
the world leader in this new technology. Many indications
lor its' use exist within the lield;* ol Neurosurgery, Otplaryn-gology
(ENT), Gynecolpgy and Plastic Surgery since the
invisible beam pi intense energy is absprbed by water which
is present in all tissue.
When the Laser beam is iPcused pn an apprppriate tissue
siirtace, cellular water and matter is instantly vapprizcd intp
a plume plsmpke withput having tp manipulate pr tpuch the
pperativc field. Cpmpared ip cpnventipnal surgery. The
Laser causes less trauma tp adjacent tissue with reduced'
bippd IPSS, swelling and ppsi pperative pain.
