U.S. Senator Alfonse D'Amato (center) tours the Grumman Test Flight Facility in
Calverton, Long Island with Grumman Aerospace President George Skurla (right) and
Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Edward Pyatt, following the signing of a $1,3 billion
contract for the continued update and production of the Grumman F-14 and A-6 Intruder.
Standing before an F-14 on the flight line Senator D'Amato remarked "The Navy recognized
that in Grumman and its (22,000) employees they have found a national asset. They
discovered it during the dark days of World War Two when Grumman provided the
Wildcats and Hellcats that met and defeated the enemy and the Navy continues to be
reminded of that workmanship and outstanding engineering found here, at what is still
called the Grumman "Ironworks", a label applied by Navy pilots who expect the best and
toughest airplanes and get it from Grumman." -^
Some additional Grumman engineers are expected to be hired as a result of this contract.
New aircraft are scheduled for delivery in mid-1990.
Meeting
County Executive Francis
T. Purcell will throw open
the doors on Monday, Oct.
1, to invite the public to tell
him personally what they
think about the 1985 county
budget.
Purcell said he will hold
an afternoon session of Oct.

an evening session from 7
PM until everyone present
has been heard. The meetings
will take place in the
board of supervisors meeting
room on the fifth floor of
the County Executive Building,
1 West St., Mineola.
"I intend to listen," Purcell
said. "I want to hear
what people have to say
about the budget and about
what they think the county
should be doing in 1985."
The onljr public hearing
required by la# is the one
that must be held by the
board of supervisors before
it adopts the proposed
budget. By law, Purcell must
present his budget to the
board by Nov. 13. The
board must act by Dec. 17.
Even though he is not
legally required to hold a
hearing, Purcell said he
wanted to listen to the public's
views before he finalizes
his proposed budget.
He said the meetings will
be informal, with people
heard in the order in which
they sign in.
