Felons Must
Pay Back
Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon
today announced that his office has been awarded
a grant from the New York State Division of
Criminal Justice Services for the establishment of
a niew unit to seize profits from criminals. The
$55,555.00 will be used to hire an Assistant District
Attorney and a Paralegal assistant to take
advantage of a new law that allows public officials
to sue felons to recover the profits of criminal
activity and to seize property used in the commission
of the crime.
Dillon said, "This new law greatly expands the
scope of forfeiture in New York State. It is hoped
that by confiscating the fruits of crime from criminals
we can deter some who might think of the
consequences of their action: The grant will allow
us to assign personnel to this task on a full time
basis."
The DA gave the following illustrations to
show how the new law can be applied:
A man steals a diamond worth $100,000. He is
convicted. The diamond disappears, but the nian
is a wealthy gem collector. The prosecutor can
bring a post-conviction forfeiture action against
the defendant for a money judgement equal to
$100,000 and can execute the judgement against
the defendant's other property.
Dillon said under the new law prosecutors will
be able to seize vehicles used in felony drunk
driving cases. "Since some motorists refuse to be

American League
Champs
The Bethpage Volleyball Team has accomplished many awesome goals
this season. These athletes worked hard, dedicating much time and effort in
order to be the best. We're hot talking about a good team — we're talking
about a great team. A team that worked together, supported each other,
and became a unit that shared many unforgettable moments.
These ladies received numerous compliments from teachers, parents,
officials, and other coaches about their talent. Some of their accomplishments
include: an undefeated league season 14-0; total games won — 99
lost — 13; their overall match record was 29-2. This is the best record in
Nassau County.
Six players were nominated to Nassau County Honors: All Division —
Kris Benasutti, senior; Jan Cantwell, senior; Lynne Rutkowski, sophomore.
All Conference — Danielle Catapano, junior. All League — Karen
Ripke, sophoinore. All County — Debbie. Dorsch, Junior (this is the
second consecutive year Debbie has won this award).
During the year, Debbie DOrsch, captain, was nominated by the Daily
News as Athlete of the Week. This was a tremendous compliment to
Debbie, the Bethpage Volleyball Team, our community, and especially for
the sport of volleyball. Also, two of our seniors, Kris Benasutti, co-captain,
and Jan Cantwell qualified from seventy-one candidates for the Nassau
county Exceptional Senior Team.
Other members of this excellent team are: Sue Dugre, senior; Dina Fahr,
sophomore; Eleanor Brosnan, sophomore; Laura Nolan, junior; Nikki
Tobin and SueTrotter, freshmen, were moved up from the junior varsity
team for the play-offs.
"There are not enough words to compliment these ladies," commented
Coach Anne DiPrima. "They deserve our recognition, pride, and thanks
for their tremendous season. "I am very proud of all of you — YOU'RE
THE BEST!", said Coach DiPrima.
