Games Mascot Gets Bethpager Graduates
Dandy Name To Medicine
The friendly lion, mascot
of the 1984 International
Games for the Disabled, has
been nameid in an election by
the 320 students of the
Human Resources School in
Albertson and the name
is a dandy.
In fact, that is the name
they chose by secret ballot
-Dan D, Lion.
The mascot and symbol of
the Games is a smiling lion
in caricature wearing a running
suit; sneakers and a
headband. On his red, white
and blue uniform is an
Olympic torch, the letters
U.S.A., and the year 1984.
Traditionally, international
games select a mascot
as a part of the panoply. For
example, the 1984 Olympic
Games to be held this
Summer in Los Angeles has
Sam, the Eagle, as its
symbol.
The Games for the Disabled,
to be held June 16 to
30 in Nassau County,
selected the lion for its symbol.
It was drawn by
Maryanne McGrath Higens
of Long Beach, an art
teacher in Lawrence Junior
High School. As the Olympics
utilized the theme of the
American Eagle for its basis,
the Lion was used to sym-
.bolize Nassau County, since
it is part of the county seal.
Once the Games committee
had the figure, it needed
a name. Who better to pick
the name than great youngsters
at the Human Resources
School? School administrators
made the task into a
lesson in democracy. Nominations
were received from
each grade level from pre-kindergarten
through high
school. Banners and posters
were created advocating the
various nominated names.
Ninth graders of teacher
Mary* Anne Cicchillo proposed
the name Dan D.,
which won in the schoolwide
balloting. Other names on
the ballot were Ravishing
Ronald, LeRoy, Physical
Fred, Outrageous Oscar,
Roary, Marathon Mickie,
• Linus and Larry,
' The victorious name was
revealed in an assembly of
elementary students conducted
by k^athy Hager's
third grade class.
Henceforth, at the Games
and in the history books,
Dan D. Lion will reign
supreme.
The lion will become
familiar to the more than
1,800 men and women athletes
who will come here
from all around the United
States and from more than

Daniel Lessner, a
Bethpage High School
graduate of the class of
1974, and the 'son of
Mrs. Cecile Lessner of
Davis Place, will commence
his medical
internship on Long
Island this summer
upon the completion of
his medical studies.
Dan will receive his
M.p. degree, Doctor
of Medicine, from the
Upstate Medical Center
in Syracuse-on May
20, 1984. This achievement
reflects an academic
career crowned
with excellence. He
graduated from Hof-stra
University in 1977
with a Bachelor of Arts
degree with an honors
commendation in
Biology. Thereafter, he
went to Touro College
and received a Bachelor
of Science degree as
a Physician's Assistant.
While at Bethpage
High School, he was an
honors* student who
was granted a scholar-ship
to ~ H o f s t ra
University.
Mr. George McEl-roy,
principal of the
high school, stated that
the high academic
achievenient and persistence
of Dan brings
much credit to the
school and is a model,
for aspiring students in
Bethpage. More important,
he said is that
Dan's dedication to
study is a tribute to his
devoted parents, his
mother and his recently
deceased father.
