Bethpage Agency Honored
James Mulcahey (standing) and Robert Ellis,
employees at Society of St. Vincent de Paul of
Bethpage, led their Agency to a new record in
employee contributions pledged to the recent
United Way campaign.
Because of their success as employee campaign
coordinator, they and the organization's
employees received United Way of Long Island's
special Leadership Award. This award is given
only to employees who significantly increase the
amount of giving potential achieved by their total
contributions.
Contributions to Long Island united campaigns
during the 1983-1984 fund-raiding year
were the greatest amount in the history of the
bicounty area. A combined total of more than $7
million in pledges was announced by United Way
of Long Island. Contributions the previous year
were $6.38 million.
These donations came from both local and
regional organizations on Long Island as well as
from individuals. Among local organizations,
contributions to this campaign rose 10.7 percent
for a total of $3,784,308. Last year's campaign
among local Long Island groups raised
$3,418,142.
Because of contributor response. United Way is
distributing 10 percent more funds to the 130
Long island voluntary agencies and hospitals
affiliated with United Way of Long Island last
year. This is the largest one-year increase in allocations
since 1978.

Neither rain nor sleet nor 32-degree temperature could
have stopped the members of the Civil Service Employees
Association (CSEA) from making their rounds at Beti^age
High School Tuesday evening, March 27. The occasion was
a regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Education,
with whom custodial and cafeteria workers are having contractual
difficulties. The meeting was not called to discuss
the grievances, but nevertheless the members demonstrated
outside in an "honorary" picket line and went inside when
the meeting started.
The picketing members included custodians, cafeteria
workers, maintenance, workers, nurses, aides -— bus drivers
and secretaries of the high school, alLof whom are members
of CSEA but of different units. The issue at hand: contract
negotiations between the custodial and cafeteria workers
and the Board.
President of the custodial unit of CSEA, Ray De Vincent,
organized the pickets after being unable to receive siatisfac-tory
conditions in the new 3-year union contract. The
group's main concern is with the last year of the contract in
which the Board has proposed what workers say is an
unsatisfactory pay increase.
According to DeVincent, 'The Board of Ed, as of right
now, has not wanted to meet with us. The negotiations have
been going on for 9 months. We gave them some possibilities
to work with, that would have saved them money, but they
weren't interested."
Although the negotiations are for custodial and cafeteria
workers, picketing members from other units were on hand
to give support to their fellow union members. After about
an hour of demonstrating outside, the picketers went into
the meeting. No serious clashes occurred but they made their
presence strongly felt.
According to several custodial workers, a new meeting
will be held sometime next week in which both sides will seek
awayoutofthedilemna.
