Hempstead Presiding
Supervisor Thomas S.
Gulotta today announced
that he will host a conference
of various local and
state officials during the
week of February 25th in
order to establish an Emergency
Crisis Communication
Network (ECCN).
Gulotta said the need for an
ECCN was amply demonstrated
this week by the lack
of notifications and communications
generated by
LILCO during the major oil
spill in Island Park.
"It became painfully clear
this week that the Long
Island Lighting Company
has failed to establish an
effective, prioritized system
of communications and notifications
in the event of
emergencies," Gulotta said.
"I believe that we must now
step in to coordinate the
groundwork for an effective
network of communications
and notifications in the
event of future emergencies.
Our conference in the next
several days will be the
initial steps towards establishing
such a system."
Gulotta noted that the
Town should have been a
top-priority notification in
the event of environmental
emergencies, such as Monday's
oil spill, since the
Town maintains several
departments which provide
vital services in these areas
(Conservation and Waterways,
and Highways for
example) and has a pool of
supervisors and workers
within minutes of any potential
disaster site. "And, yet,
with the obvious need to
quickly notify the Town,
LILCO never directly noti-
• fied the Town during the
recent oil spill. Surely, a better
system must be established
and made mandatory
for the utility to implement.
We intend to do just that in
the weeks ahead."
The Presiding Supervisor
will summon the following
organizations and/or representatives
to the conference:
