Bethpage Man Ordained
Permanent Peacon
The Most Rev. John R. McGann, bishop, of the Catholic
Diocese of Rockville Centre., will ordain James A. Biggin of
Bethpage a permanent deacon on Saturday. May 4, at 11
a.m. at vSt. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre.
Mr. Biggin, a 20-year veteran ol'lhe New York City Police
Department, is a detective .sergeant. He is a graduate of St.
Francis Prep in Brooklyn and New York Tech. He lives in
Bethpage with his wife Carmela; where they are members of
St. Martin of Tours parish. They arc the parents of five sons
and two daughters.
Mr. Biggin has .served on the parish council and the liturgy
committee at St. Martin's; he has also been involved in
religious education and marriage preparation programs.
After his ordination he expects to.continue in many of the
same kinds of involvements.
Mr, Biggin will be one of a group of ten men ordained
deacons at the May 4-celebration. They will be the sixth
gr(Sup of men ordained to the permanent diaconate for the
diocese since the restoration of the pemianeul diaconate
following the second Vatican Council. There are ovef 100
permanent deacons in the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Detective Staudt Retires
Oyster Bay Town Councilman John Vcnditto (second

County Police Department. Staudt was honored by friends
and colleagues at a party held at A*htun's in Hicksville. Also
on hand to honor the Bethpage residents were Staudt's sons.

Host Families Lighting The Candle of Knowledge
Host Families are being
sought for 25 high school
students from Sweden,
Norway, Denmark, Finland,
Holland, Belgium,
Switzerland, Germany,
Spain, France, Italy, Brazil,
Equadpr and Australia for
the school year 1985-86, in a
program sponsored by the
American Intercultural
Student Exchange (AISE).-
The students, age 15
through 17, will arrive in the
United States in August
1985, attend the local high
school, and return to their,
home country in June 1986.
The students, all fluent in
English, have been screened
by their school representatives
in,their, home couiitries
and have spending money
and medical insiirance.
Families interested in
hosting a Spanish student,
age 15 through 17, will
arrivein the United States in
August 1985, attend the
local high school, and return
to their home country in
June 1986. The students, all

home countries and have
spending money and medical
insurance.
Families interested in
hosting a Spanish student,
age 15 through 18, during
five summer weeks 1985
(end of June through July)
are also being sought. The
students in this program will
not attend school.
Host Families with small
children are welcome to participate
in both programs.
Host Families may deduct
$50 per month for Income
Tax purposes.
AISE is also seeking
American high school students
age 15 through 17,
who would like to spend a
high school year in Sweden,
Norway, Denmark, Finland,
(jermany, Switzerland,
France, Spain or Australia
or participate in a
three-week Host Family
stay combined with a 10-day
bus travel throughout Western
Europe or England.
Families interested in this
program should contact the
person named above immediately.

the prospective Host
Family's telephone number.
On Wednesday, March 27, at Antun's Old Country Manor, 25 of Bethpage
High School's top ranking students were welcomed into the Bethpage
Chapter of the National Honor Society at its annual Induction Banquet,
organized by the Bethpage Dad's Club and the senior members of the
society, under the supervision of Mrs. Harriet Mensch.
The new members, parents and guests began the evening with a full-course
dinner. Speefches by the Principal, Mr. George McElroy, and the
Superintendent of Schools, Dr. John Sommi and the society's officers on
Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character (the ideals of the Honor
Society) opened the formal induction ceremony.
Following the speeches, the roll was read, the new members signed their
names in the book and lit candles, symbolic of their search for Knowledge
and Truth. When all of the new members had been inducted, all members,
old and new, recited together the National Honor Society Oath.
Congratultions to the newly inducted members. The whole Bethpage
Community salutes you. And a big thank you to the Dad's Club for making
the evening such a memorable occasion for all.
The following Bethpage High School students were inducted into the
National Honor Society: Mario Arbore, Denise Chan, Edward Conlon,
Michele Delia Rocca, George Dikernan, Evan Dunne, Oliver Giannotti,
Amy Gulkis, Patti Lisa Hantman, Aaron Han, Dara Jaffee, Joyce Juma-wan,
Lisa Loser, Christine Lutz, Jennifer Matulewich, Mary Jane Muhlb-ach,
Shari Nudelman, Enrico Panno, Thomas Pizzuti, Ellen Schiff,
Richard Schrage, Stacy Schuman, Laura Strowbridge, Tracey Triandafil-lou
and Christine Ungania.
American Cancer Society Awards Silver Sword
The American Cancer
Society, Long Island Division,
Inc. will honor one of
its finest volunteers, Mr.
Robert J. Bornstein, with
the presentation of its Silver
Sword Award, announced
Paul G. Prager, Chairman
of the Board.
The Silver Sword Award
is presented to a member of
the Long Island community
who has* given unselfishly of
his time and talents to the
cause of cancer control. Mr.
Bornstein is Vice Chairman
of the Board of the American
Cancer Society, Long
Island Division, and has had
an impressive career with
the ACS since he was first
elected to the Board of
Directors in 1979. He has
served on the Executive
Committee from 1980 to
present. Mr. Bornstein has
also served as Chairman of
the Oyster Bay District
Committee and has given
dynamic leadership to the
development of units and
volunteer programs in that
area. He has been a member
of the Division's Crusade,
Finance and Nominating
Committees. Mr. Bornstein
is known as a Board member
who is "always there" when
someone needs help.
