Poppy
Month
iNext Governor'.'G.O.P. GubernaioriaU-iiiuidaif Andrew
O'Rourke (right), the Westchester County Executive,
recently visited State Senator JohnR. Dunne (R-Nassau) to
discuss some of the issues he will be addressing in the the
upcoming campaign.
The month of May is the
month of Remembrance to
Veterans of all wars. It begins
with "Buddy Poppy"
sales to aid those Veterans,
who must spend the time in
hospitals to repair their
broken bodies and minds so
badly damaged in the horrors
of combat. The culmination
of the month is
Memorial Day to honor
those who sacrificed their
lives, that we might pursue
our lives in Freedom.
On that day will be the
Parades that Honor those
fallen Comrades, and many
will be the Flags carried
in that Tribute.
In order to respect that
Emblem of our Great
Nation, etiquette requires us
to stand facing "Old Glory"
and salute by placing hand
over heart in memory of the
struggles of our Nation, having
survived the many trials
since the birth of our
Nation!

55+ Gearing Up For
Fun & Games
Seniors throughout New York are putting on their sneakers
and gearing up for the fourth annual New York State
Senior Games, June 20-22 at the SUN Y College at Cortland.
"Each year, through Senior Games participation, more
and more men and women are learning 'You don't stop
playing because you grow old; you grow old because you
stop playing'", noted State Parks Commissioner Orin Lehman,
whose agency operates the program in cooperation
with the NYS Office for the Aging and the State University
of New York.
New York men and women age 55+ join in tennis, golf,
swimming, bridge, track and more. Two levels of participation
insure that people at all levels of expertise enjoy taking
part in the Games.
Most participate in the Recreational Division, for fun,
fitness and fellowship. There are no minimum qualifications.
The Competitive Division, however, is limited to
serious competitors wishing to qualify for the US National
Senior Olympics or train for the Empire State Games Masters
and other competitions. Gold, silver and bronze medals
are awarded to winners for each activity in both divisions.
Early registration for the Senior Games is encouraged, to
insure placement in events of choice. Applications and
details are available from county offices for the aging. State
Park regional offices or by writing: Senior Games, Long
Island State Park Commission, P.O. Box 247, Babylon,

Gov. Cuomo On Shoreham
by Governor Mario M. Cuosno
The Chief of Staff at the White House now has admitted
what many of us who oppose the Shoreham nuclear plant
have been saying for years. There is no realistic way to
evacuate people from that area in the event of an emergency.
The significance of his statement couldn't be more profound.
Even the White House has now agreed that an effective
evacuation plan for Shoreham, a statutory prerequisite
to licensing the plant, is impossible.
Mr. Regan's answer to the problem of evacuation is
apparently to build a bridge to Connecticut. It's not a new
idea. St has been considered and rejected before, for sound
environmental and economic reasons. As an evacuation
option, it is equaly unsound. Would LILCO control the
thousands of panicked motorists attempting to squeeze onto
this concrete lifeline? Would the taxpayers of the State or the
county be expected to finance this bailout for LILCO?
Two events in this past week have made it clear that
Shoreham cannot operate. The statement by Mr. Regan is
the latest confirmation that an effective evacuation plan for
the Shoreham plant is impossible. And the disaster at Chernobyl
IS a chilling reminder that the need for an effective
evacuation plan cannot be ignored.
