Students Earn $341,000
The students in the r3istribulion-Marketing and Vocational
Cooperative Work-Studv Programs in Bethpage
Senior High School earned $340,941 during the 1985-86
school year. Students worked an average of twenty-three
hours per week and received an average yearly earning of
S3,747.
These work-study programs offer junior and senior students
an opportunity for a variety of on-job work experience
which are related to their classroom instruction. The purpose
ofthe program is the development of proper altitudes
and skills through work experience. The Distribution-
Marketing program provides opportunities in retailing,
wholesaling, and the service industries. In Vocational Cooperative,
students are provided work experience in the industrial,
trade and technical areas. Job placements, for example,
range from salespersons, data entry operators, typist,
tellers, cashiers, insurance office workers, automotive
mechanics, carpenters, and machinists.
The enrollment in these programs has been consistent
even in a period of declining student population. Next year's
student enrollment projections already show a 10% increase
in registration of 108 students.
Mr. Edward Gehl,, the coordinator of these programs,
also runs a siudent placement service for all students. .Job
leads are posted on a bulletin board in room 117. This
placement service will be in operation during July and early
August for interested students with working papers.

County ExecuJiv.e Francis T. Purcell said thai the program
enabled many youngsters to return to .school in the fall
while providing them with valuable work experience.
"Whenever possible', Purcell said, "the students are placed
in jobs that relate to their high school or college programs.
These youngsters are given the opportunity to earn money
lor college tuition while working in career related summer
jobs." The county executive called the program "a success
story," and noted that many former summer aides have gone
on to graduate from college and enter careers in law, medicine,
engineering and education.
The program, which costs $400,000, is iunded entirely bv
