New Assignments
Marie. Haberstroh of
Farmingviile, has been
appointed Manager of the
Radiology Department at
Mid-Island Hospital, it was-announced
this week by
James J. Dickson, Administrator
for the 237 bed health
care facility in Bethpage.
As the Manager and Chief
Technician of the multi million
dollar department, ms.
Haberstroh will direct the
use of all diagnostic x-ray,
Mammorgrpahy, Ultra
Sound and Cat Scanner
equipment.
On the hospital staff since
1982, marie Haberstroh has
been responsible for all
diagnostic procedures and
emergency specials pertaining
to radiological department.
Dr. Edward J. Cook, who
has served as the Chief
Administrative Officer on
Long Island University's
C.w. Post Campus since
1973, will leave that office in
September to develop and
head "The Long Island Business
Conference/A Service
of Long Island University,"
a new proprietary unit of
LFU that will provide business
and market research
services to the private sector.
Dr. Steinberg, in a letter
to students, faculty, and
staff on the-university's six
campuses, praised Dr. Cook
for his "magnificent service"
to LIU. He added that the
new position to which he
was appointing Dr. Cook is
part of an ongoing reorga-nixation
initiated by the
University two years ago.
Dr. Cook, whoe arlier'this
week was named chairman
of a commission appointed
by Nassau County Executive
Francis Purcell to
study a possible public
takeover of Long • island
Lighting Co., has been associated
with Long Island
University since 1964 when
he joined its faculty as Professor
of Economics and
Director of th§ Division of
Business.
Murder In Bethpage
The Nassau County Police Homicide Squad is investigating
an apparent Robbery Homicide which occurred prior to
11:00 A.M. on January 21, in a Bethpage residence.
The body of^victim, John Ryder, 25 years, was discovered
after co-workers stopped at his residence at 9 Kilmer Street,
Bethpage, to inquire about his whereabouts. Ryder was a
chef at the Manor East Restaurant, 201 Jerusalem Avenue,
Massapequa.
Another tenant at that address checked the house at the
request of the co-woriters and discovered Ryder's body in
the basement. He had been stabbed repeatedly in the chest
during a struggle inside the house.
"We believe it's possibly drug related," said 8th Precinct
Homicide Detective John Nolan. *There was evidence in the
house that drugs were.being sold..." Nolan added.
According to police, no weapon has been recovered and
there were no indications of a forced entry. Police said
Ryder was last seen at home Monday evening.
The Homicide Squad is seeking the public's assistance.

Walkabout Boys Now Have Sisters
On January 10, 1986, Nassau Children's House, Inc., a
100 year old residential«caFe agency, hosted a reception to
dedicate the newest of their five homes for young people.
The new residence, Walkabout for Young Women, is the
first young adult shelter for young women in Nassau Gounty.
Kenneth Katz, President of the Board of DiFfectors of
Nassau Children's House, presided at the dedicalion c^rem-oney,
which was attended by 150 invited guests Mr. Katz
expressed his gratitude to the many government leaders who
made this day possible, among them Governor Mario
Cuom'b, New York State Department of Social Services
Commissioner Cesar Perales and New York State Division
for Youth Commissioner Leonard Dunston.
Executive Director Richard Dina personally thanked
Nassau County Youth Board Director Ann Irvin for her
unwavering commitment to youth in Nassau County anjd
her tireless efforts in bringing about the opening of the
Walkabout for Young Women. Mr. Nicholas Dellisanti
represented County Executive Francis Purcell, and conveyed
Mr. Purcell's dedication to providing services to
homeless youth in Nassau County.
Commissioner Perales brought with him a citation from
Governor Cuomo which praised Nassau Children's House
for playing "an important role in inaugurating programs for
homeless and troubled young fieople." Thc'governoi's citation'described
Walkabout for Young Women as "yet
another example of the wonderful services provided to
youth and families.on Long Island for over 100 years by
Nassau Children's House."
Members oi the Woman's Club of Bethpage attended the
dedication of "Walkabout For Young Women". The Woman's
Club is a contributor to this home, which is a program
of Nassau Children's House Inc., as is the Walkabout Home
for young men in Bethpage. These homes are a vital step
towards independence for the young men and women they
house, and the Woman's Club of Bethpage strongly encourages
and congratulates Nassau Children's House Inc. for
enabling this reality.

Poster ContestTinalist
County Fxeculive Francis T. Purcell, right, congratulates
Bethpage High School student Marcy Gobetz of Bethpage, a
finalist in the recently held county-wide high school poster
contest competition, as James Farley, past president of tht
Greater New York Automobile Association looks on. The
contest, which was held to coincide with, and call attention
to, the designation of "National Drunk and Drugged Driving
Awareness Week," was sponsored by the Nassau County
Traffic Safety Board in cooperation with the Greater New
York Automobile Dealers' Association who awarded cash
prizes to the four top winners. «
Focusing on the theme of driving while intoxicated, the
contest was open to all tenth-through twelfth grade high
school students in Nassau County. Of the 350 entrants, 55
finalists were chosen and four winners were selected. The
four winning posters will be displayed in the lobby of the
New York Coliseum during the Jan. 25 through Feb. 2 Auto

The "Annual Easter Seal Basketball Shoot-Out is well
underway with New York Knicks' Center Bill Cartwright
returning as Honorary Chairman, One hundred lucky
youngsters will meet Bill and Knicks' Trainer Michael
Saunders on center court of Madison Square Garden for a
special Clinic...one of the many exciting prizes offered in this
year's event!
Schools and youth groups throughout Long Island are
currently registering for the Shoot-Out, which is held at each
coach or teacher's convenience prior to February 28. To
participate, youngst«;rs shoot baskets for a three minute
period, collecting pledges for the number of baskets they

and MADISON SQUARE GARDEN CENTER, official
Shoot-Out sponsors, participants can win Knicks calendars,

from the event iwU helps support year-round Easter
SEal programs and services benefitting children and adults
with disabilities. On Long Island these programs include
residential camping, stroke support groups, equipment
loan, scoliosis information, adult socialization groups and
summer speech therapy.
