Vote YES On
Enmronmental Quality Bond Act
by Allan Lerner
On November 4, 1986 voters on Long Island will be asked
to vote on one of the most important issues ever placed
before them on a baiiot: Proposition one. The Environmental
Quality Bond Act.
We Long Islanders are now faced with a very serious
problem. One that effects our health, our lives and the
quality of life we will enjoy in future years to come. We rely
on rain water stored underground in sandy soil called aquifers
for our only source of drinking water. Over the decades
hazardous waste from municipal and private landfills has
been seeping into these aquifers and polluting our water.
Sandy soil does not remove toxic chemicals from our water.
Once picked up these toxic chemicals move down with the
rain into our aquifer system. These chemical pollutants are
then carried many miles underground thus contaminating
any public or private well in its path. Closing toxic dump
sites only prevents additional chemicals from being added to
the immense deposits of toxic plumes already buried
beneath these landfills. We must clean up this hazardous
waste otherwise these enormous toxic plumes will continue
to seep into our water supply and eventually make it
undrinkable.
There is something each and every citizen can do now to
begin to correct this situation. On Election Day, November
4, 198!6e0«je*:^,iartdv6fe'yes for-Proposition One, The
Environmental Quality Bond Act of 1986. This bond act is
intended to correct the carelessness of the past and protect
our environment for the future. !t will allocate money to
clean up dangerous sites where hazardous wastes were
placed in the past. In addition it will allow the state to
preserve and protect current unused land over our aquifeir
recharge areas which is essential to the protection of our
water in the future.
Everyone living on Long Island has the responsibility to
themselves and their families to see that something is done to
counteract this dangerous situation. For further information
on what you can do contact Allan Lerner, Environmental
Chairman, Citizen Action of New York at our Amityville
office, (516)691-5565.
