T. Purcell to the March of

campaign. Mr. Purcell is
serving as Corporate

"The March of Dimes'
mission ~ preventing birth

gives the subject serious
thought will realize that he
or she knows a family which
has experienced the tragedy
of having a baby born with a
birth defect. By joining
WalkAmerica '86, the corporate
community will show
support for the March of
Dimes, and raise a considerable
amount of money to
help prevent birth defects ~
America's number one child
health problem," Mr. Purcell
said.
Walk America '86 is the
17th annual March of
Dimes walkathon. Individuals
and teams secure as
many sponsors as they can
for each of the 25 kilometers
they walk. After the Walk,
participants are awarded
premiums based on the
amount of pledge money
they send to the March of
Dimes. Money raised
through WalkAmerica '86
will help fund research, medical
services and public
health education programs
aimed at preventing birth defects.

Top Cop of tlie Montli
January, 1986
P.O. James Brophy (left) is presented with the Top Cop of
the Month Award by Deputy Inspector Frank Matzen. .
On the morning of January 18, 1986 while
working a tour of duty, PO Brophy was taking an
assault report at the Nassau Mall, Hempstead
Turnpike, Levittown when he heard a loud crash
and all of the electrical power at the Mall, as well
as Hempstead Turnpike, went out. He further
observed a huge electrical flash at the entrance to
the Mall and an auto on fire against a LILCO
pole. He immediately ran over to the car, while
signalling for assistance over his radio. The auto
had extensive front end damage and had hit the
pole with such impact that the rear axle was also
damaged. Inside the vehicle there wre two
unconscious people. A 21 year old male and his 25
year old female companion were lying across the
front seat. With complete disregard for his own
safety. Amongst the sparkling electrical wires that
were knocked down during the accident and the
burning car, PO Brophy managed to pull both
victims to safety.
