Grant For Games
Hempstead Town Presiding
Supervisor Joseph N.
Mondello, and New York
State Senator John Dunne,
have announced that a
$150,000 local assistance
grant from the New York'
State Office of Parks and
Recreation has been procured
to underwrite the
Canadian-American-Pacific
games, an international
competition for handicapped
athletes. The games
are scheduled to be held at
Mitchel Park in Nassau
County from July 29th to
August 3rd.
The Can-Am Games, as
they are commonly known,
provide an opportunity for
disabled athletes from
around the world to engage

(R-C." Wantagh) has

District residents that applications

which provided free admission
to state tourist attractions,
are available at his district
office.
"New York's beaches,
parks, museums and historic
sites rival among the finest
in the nation and around the
world. One ot the best ways
to see the sites around New
York state Is by applying for
a New York State Empire
Passport which oilers a real
bargain to state residents,"
Parola said.
According to Parola, the
New York Empire Passport
can be obtained for $25 and
can provide substantial savings
over a year's time.
Parola noted that the
"Empire Passport" can be

in world class competition in
a wide variety of sporting
events. This year the games
are being jointly sponsored
by the U.S. Organization for
Disabled Athletes and the
Nassau County Department
of Recreation and Parks.
The future of the games
was imperiled when additional
funding for the housing
of the more than 1000
participating disabled athletes
became necessary.
Faced with locating a
funding source, the games'
organizers turned to Presiding
Supervisor Mondello for
assistance. Mr. Mondello
contacted State Senator
Dunne, who, with the assistance
of State Senators
Ralph Marino, Norman
Levy, Michael Tully, and
Dean Skelos located the
necessary funding in the
local assistance budget of
the New York State Office
of Parks and Recreation.
The $150,000 procured by
Presiding Supervisor Mondello
and Senator Dunne
will be used to meet the
$36.25 per day room and
board fee for the athletes'
accomodations at Hofstra
University. In addition,
some of this funding will be
used to defray the cost of the
special handicapped transportation
that many of the
participants will need in
order to be taken from Hofstra
to the Mitchel Park
game site.
The Can-Am games are
expected to attract athletes
who are amputees, blind or
suffering from Cerebral
Palsy. These athletes will be
from at least 12 countries,
including: the United States,
Belgium, Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, France
and the Netherlands.
12th Graders Fight Hunger
At Bethpage High
School, Mrs. McKin-ley's
twelfth graders
formed a committee to
eliminate worldwide
hunger. They studied
brochures circulated by
the Hunger Project-whose
aim it is to end
worldwide hunger by
the year 2000, and in
doing so, learned some
of the steps they could
take to help eliminate
hunger.
Their first step
involved circulating
petitions which were
mailed to President
Reagan pledging stur.
dent support of legislation
and programs
aimed at ending hunger
in the United States
and the world.
The students then
decided to counteract
hunger on Long Island
by holding monthly
food drives for the St.
Vincent DePaui Society.
The Committee
worked making posters,
talking to different
homerooms, collecting
food and bringing it to
the St. Vincent DePaul
Society. During the last
week of each month,

students and staff to
bring in canned goods,
particularly peanut
butter, jelly, soap,
paper products, tuna
fish, soup, coffee, tea,
shaving cream and
toiletries.
Rosemary McGraw,
Secretary of the St.
Vincent DePaul Society,
in thanking the
students for their ongoing
concern, advised
them that they are helping
two families in the
area to get the food
they need.
Members of the
Hunger Committee
include Loretta Cara-donna,
Kevin Conway,
Michael Ewald, Karl
Gerken, Chris Mescia,
John Schmidt, and
Christina Sorrentino.
