Drunk Drivers To
Be Videotaped
Nassau County District
Attorney Denis Dillon has
announced that Governor
Cuomo has ordered State
Police in Nassau to begin
videotaping drivers who
refuse to take Breathalyzer
tests when charged with
drunk driving on the county's
parkways. The Governor
acted in response to a
request from DA Dillon.
According to Dillon,
"Five years ago 1 asked Nassau
County Police to videotape
drunk drivers. This has
proven very successful.
Since State Police account
for one third of all DWl
arrests in the County, it's
important to the prosecution
of these cases that they
too videotape drunk
drivers."
"Filmed representatives
ot the accused's complexion,
facial expressions, muscular
coordination, speech patterns
and general physical
condition at the time in
question are convincing
proof of the average individuals'
state of sobriety, it
will aid the prosecution of
DWl cases by providing significant
objective evidence
of guilt, encouraging guilty
pleas and speeding up dispositions,"
said Dillon.
The DA said prior to
videotaping DWl defendants
who refuse the breathalyzer
test prosecutors were
left with only a Police Officer's
observatons. Jurors
were reluctant to conviction
on just this evidence. Today
with a videotape of the
driver the jury can see for
themselves the demeanor of
the alleged drunk drivers
and his or her ability to
complete a performance
test.
State Police, under the
Governor's direction, will
conduct the videotaping of
DWl detendants injust Nassau
County, If it's successful
it will be expanded throughout
New York State.

Joint Nassau/Suffolk Police Program
Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta and Suffolk
County Executive Michael LoGrande have announced that
the two county police departments have launched a comprehensive
program designed to address police matters which
transcend the two counties. Gulotta and LoGrande indicated
that this was the first time the two departments had
formally worked so intensely together on a regional program.
The joint endeavor is the result of efforts of Gulotta
and LoGrande to forge regional solutions to issues common
to both counties.
"Clearly crime does not stop at the County line," Gulotta
said, "and neither should our efforts toward addressing

what will be a series of joint programs among departments in
the two counties designed to address major issues affecting
both Counties, and it is an outgrowth of our meetings earlier,
this year, as well as follow-up by our respective staff

"Through these projects we feel that new areas of cooperation
