Halloween.....
Treat Without Tricks
Senator Norman J. Levy (R-C-Merrick) urges
parents and children to be especially careful on
Halloween this year.
Almost everyone welcomes the parade of costumed
youngsters that takes place every Halloween,
but, unfortunately, what should be a truly
fun day can be—and too often has been—turned
into a day of tragedy with a child being poisoned
or seriously injured by a malicious prank.
"The best way for the entire community to
enjoy this special day is for parents to be sure their
children are properly supervised," Levy stressed.
"Young children should be accompanied by an
adult if they are going to 'trick or treat' and they
should not eat any of their goodies until their parents
or some other responsible person has had an
.opportunity to look them over carefully and make
sure the wrappings are intact and have not been
tampered with."
Since Daylight Savings Time will not be in
effect on'Halloween and darkness will fall at an
earlier hour. Levy is urging all motorists to be
extra cautious in watching out for "trick or treat-ers".
To make themselves more visible to motorists,
children collecting Halloween treats during
the evening, should carry a flashlight, wear light
colored clothing, use the sidewalks, or, if necessary,
walk on the side of the road facing oncoming
traffic, and remove their masks while
crossing streets.
Levy added that too often, older children get
caught up with "tricks" that turn into acts of
vandalism and he is reminding parents that as the
result of a new law, they can be held responsible
for up to $2,500 in damages or losses caused by
their 10 to 18 year olds' destructive acts or burglaries
and that applies to Halloween damages, as
well as to damages on the other 364 days of the
year.
"Parents should also make a special effort to
know where their older children are on
Halloween— and that any parties they attend are
supervised by responsible adults." Levy concluded,
"Trick's or pranks that cause damage to
public or private property hurt every-one
involved—the community, the victim, the youngster
and the parents."
