"Ghost" Gasoline Stations
Studied For Possible Dangers
Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta
today directed the County Attorney to launch an
inimediate inquiry in conjunction with the Nassau
Fire Marshal into possible dangers posed by un-staffed
100% self-service gasoline stations.
Gulotta noted that the "ghost" gas stations, as
they are called, may pose serious health and safety
problemi^ and indicated that he may move to ban
such establishments before they begin to appear
in Nassau County.
"it has been brought to my attention by the
Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association
(LIGRA) that a growing number of larger oil
compnaies have recently been instituting the concept
of un-staffed 100% self-service gasoline station
in other parts of the country and the world,"
Gulotta said. "Such a concept appears to pose
some serious fire safety and health hazards. In
addition, it deprives our residents of Important
services. I believe it is prudent to act now in order
to protect our residents' health and safety."
The County Executive noted that the "ghost"
service stations were already operating throughout
Europe and have now begun appearing in
California.
"It is understandable for service stations in
high-traffic areas to devote some of their gas
islands to self-serve operation. But, at the very
least, one island should always continue to be a
full service island. Not only does it mitigate concerns
over fire safety but it provides important
human services needed by our handicapped and
disabled motorists."
Gulotta has requested a report from the County
Attorney and Fire Marshal within a week, after
which he will be discussing the matter further with
appropriate staff and the Board of Supervisbrs.
"If our research concludes that the 100% self-service
stations pose as many hazards as it would
appear at first blush, then 1 am prepared to
recommend a law banning these stations from all
corners of our County in the most expeditious
manner possible," Gulotta concluded.
Wantagh, Bethpage & Jones Beach Parkways
Granted Historic Status
Assemblyman Frederick E. Parola (R-C, Wantagh) has
hailed the designation of Wantagh State Parkway, Bethpage
State Parkway and state parkways in the Jones Beach area
as historic landmarks by the state Department of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation.
"The state's decision is a major victory in helping to
maintain the national beauty of these roadways," Parola
said.
By declaring these highways historic landmarks, they are

eligible for designation on the National Register of Historic
Places, he said.
Parola added that any proposed work will now be
reviewed by the state Parks Department to ensure that the
historic features of the roads are preserved.
According to the assemblyman, 34 miles of local parkways
have been nominated for historic preservation. They
include the Wantagh Parkway south of Southern State, the
Bethpage Parkway, and, near Joneg Beach, the Ocean, Bay
State and Loop Parkways.
Legislation introduced last year by Assemblyman Parola
and Sen. Levy called for the preservation of the Wantagh
State Parkway in response to a state Department of Transportation
highway project which removed a number of 70to
80-year old trees. The new historic preservation designation
will ensure that similar instances do not occur again.
"These high^vays are valuable historic and picturesque
roadways," Parola said. "Their designation for historic
preservation will ensure that they forever will remain the
way they were intended to be."
