Long Island Rail Road
New Parking Program
Today, the Long Island Rail Road
introduced its proposed new parking
program requirements to the Long
Island Committee of the MTA. In
January 1988, the LIRR set aside $20
million in its 1987-91 Capital Program
for the development of additional
parking within its commuter
territory in conjunction with the
MTA Parking Policy. The LIRR's
proposed parking plan details the
criteria for localities to participate in
the program. The criteria have been
established to allow for the most effective
use of available funds.
The major elements and criteria
that will be taken into consideration
in establishing the viability of each
parking improvement application are:
o Parking Need: Current parking
occupancy rates should be 84 percent
or above. This is the accepted figure
for parking expansion established by
transportation experts.
o Property Availability: Property,
either public or privately owned, must
be available within reasonable walking
distance of the LIRR station.
o Type of Improvement: Property
may be vacant or utilized. Parking can
be created through decking or the
construction of a parking garage or
underground facility.
o Community Acceptance: Issues
to be addressed include parking restrictions,
parking facility design, and
vehicle traffic access.
o Maintence: Localities are
required to operate and maintain all

'TOM & CHEVY"
County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta greets comic-actor Chevy Chase,
who recently came to Nassau County to film scenes from "Fletch ir*, a
sequal to his highly successful 1985 movie, "Fletch'\ in which Chase plays
a bumbling, investigative newspaper journalist with multiple disguises.
' i was delighted to have met Chevy Chase and to thank him and his
producer for filming portions of his new movie, "Fletch 11" in our County,
said Gulotta. "He is an extremely gifted comic-actor and we wish him
much success in his new movie. I'm sure it will be another box office hit.
While in iNassau County, parts of the motion-picture were filmed at the
Nassau Coliseum, which they decorated to resemble a television evangelist's
national headquarters, and also at the EAB Pla^sa and Nassau
Community College.
