Bethpage Youth
Arrested in
Murder Conspiracy
ROBERT COIRO
On November 1, 1988 a 19 year
old Bethpage youth was charged
with trying tc hire an undercover
jolice officer to kill another Bethpage
youth for allegedly harassing
lis girlfriend.
Robert Coiro, a chimney sweep,
rf 5 Scherer St. pleaded not guilty
;o charges of 2nd degree conspiracy
;o commit murder at his arraign-nent
in Hempstead. Coiro was
irrested in a Bank parking lot at 500
licksville Road in Bethpage.
It is alleged that Coiro offered an
jndercover police officer $500 to kill
John Fazio, 16, of 34 Berkshire
R.oad in Bethpage, who allegedly hit
Coiro's girlfriend, Darcy Maloney
ilso from Bethpage. It was reported
that Maloney and Fazio had dated
each other but broke up about a year
ago after a heated dispute. It was
then that Maloney began dating
Coiro.
Reports from the Nassau Police
Major Case Squad indicate that they
learned about Corio's plot from a
Massapequa youth who alleged that
Coiro paid him $300 to find a hit
man to kill Fazio. It was then that
an undercover police officer contacted
Coiro, claiming to be a hit
man, and was given a down payment
of $40 to murder the 16 year old
vouth. Coiro's bail has been set at
$250,000 and a temporary order of
protection has been issued for Fazio,
the intended victim.
Public Assistance Needed
In Plainview Hit and Run
Homicide Squad Det. Nick
D*Avanzo is asking the public's help
in locating two vehicles that were possibly
involved in a hit and run that
occured October 31st about 5:40 pm
at the intersection of South Oyster Bay
Rd. and Virginia Ave., Plainview.
Agnes McDonald, 60, of 8 Bradley
St., Plainview, had just left her church
after attending mass and was about
to cross South Oyster Bay Rd. from
west to east and go to her parked car.
A green van traveling northbound
in the left lane and a brown sporty
type car also northbound but in the
right lane of South Oyster Bay Rd.
appeared to both strike McDonald.
Both vehicles left scene.
McDonald was transported to Nassau
County Medical Center, E. Meadow
where she has been admitted in
critical condition with head trauma,
shattered pelvis, fracture to the right
leg and laccr- ations.
Agnes McDonald succumbed to her
injuries and was pronounced dead at
11:30 P.M. by Dr Gelben of the
hospital staff.
Anyone with information concerning
this accident is asked to caU the
Nassau Homicide Squad at 516/535-
7788. All calls will be kept
confidential.
Overtumed Oil Truck
Closes S.O.B. Exit Ramp

Officer for Nassau County Police
Department reports the details of an
oil spill that occurred in Seaford on
10-31-88 at 3:00 P.M.
Felix Nicastro 54, of 69 Gray La.,
Levittown, was driving a truck for
Meenan Oil, 3020 Burns Ave., Wan-tagh.
While exiting the southbound
lane of the Seaford Oyster Bay
Expressway, on the exit ramp to
westbound Sunrise Hwy., the oil truck
overturned. The 5,000 gal. tanker
ruptured in several places spilling an
estimated 1,000 gallons of #2 fuel oil
onto the roadway and down storm
drains. Police Officers from the 7th
precinct and highway Patrol, as well
as the Police Hazardous Material
Unit, with Cpt. John Carlson in
charge responded to the scene. Wan-tagh
and Seaford Fire Departments
also responded.
Nicastro was taken to Massapequa
General hospital suffering from a possible
concussion. |4r. Gene Walsh of
Meenan Oil also responed to the scene
and advisedd police that a private
contractor had been contacted and
was enroute to clean up the spiU.
Because some of the fuel oil went into
storm drains the Nassau County
Health Dept., Town of Oyster Bay
Constable, Coast Guard, Department
of Enviornmental Conservation, and
the Department of Transportation
were notified.
At 4:45 p.m. the truck was towed
to Meenan Oil on Burns Ave., Wan-tagh
where it will be examined by the
Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Safety
Unit who is continuing the
investigation.
The oil spill does not create a health
hazard at this time and it is reported
that there is no danger of combustion.
The exit ramp remains closed for clean
up purposes.
Candy Tampering in Bethpage
Det. WiUiam Burns of the 8th
Squad reports the details of a Tampering
of a candy bar that occurred in
Bethpage at 7:30 PM on Oct. 31.
Valerie Wertovitch 42, of 63 Essex
Rd. was informed by her 11 year old
son that he bit into a Kit Kat candy
bar and discovered a two inch sewing
needle. Further inspection of her son's
Halloween candy revealed a three inch
sewing needle in a Three Muskateers
candy bar.
There were no injuries reported.
The 8th Squad is continuing the
investigation.
