Old Bethpage Plainview
VOL. 22 NO. 21 April 7-13,1989 20 CENTS
On the 18th of February, Mr. Paul
lasevoli, a Spanish teacher at Beth-page
High School, and Mrs. Linda
Siani, a Spanish teacher at the Long
Island School for the Gifted and an
active member of the Bethpage PTA,
chaperoned a group of six Bethpage
High School students on a six day tour
of Spain. The six students, who are
currently enrolled in Advanced Placement
Spanish, are Lisa Guarino, Jen
Prensky, Jennifer Parry, E)anielle
Siani, Russell Singer, and Erica
Sylvester. During their six day stay,
the students spent three days in the
capital city of Madrid; where they
visited the Prado and the royal palace
of the current king and queen of
Spain, Juan Carlos and Sophia. On
day two of the trip, the students took
a 75 mile bus trip to Toledo, the
ancient Morrish capital of Spain. In
Toledo the students were given an
architectural tour of the city and
viewed the works of the Spanish
painter, El Greco. Also included in
the Madrid stay was an excursion to
El Escorial, the royal Ubrary, and El
Valle de los Caidos, the monumento
to the Spanish Civil War.
On day four of the trip, the group
flew to the port city of Barcelona,
about three hundred miles from
Madrid. Barcelona is one of Spain's
most artistic cities with architecture
by Gaudi, Miro, Picasso, and Dali.
The students enjoyed a complete
overview of art nouveau and art deco
as well as other artistic styles of the
20th century. Just outside of the city
of Barcelona the students visited
Montjuinch, the site of the up-coming
^92 Olympics, and El Pueblo Espanol,
a microcosm of the Iberian peninsula.
Mr. lasevoli also provided the stu
dents with a private tour of the Picasso
museum, where several roms are
devoted to Picasso's abstract rendition
of Velasquez' famous painting "Las
Meninas": an entertaining art display.
The weather in Spain was excellent
as usual, 60-70 degrees every day.
Returning to New York's cold February
was difficult for the group who
still look back with nostalgia on the
sunshine of Spain. The students'
reaction to the trip was excellent. They
all feel that they learned more in six
days than they could have learned in
six months. The value of the "living
classroom** is clearly demonstrated to
the students by their improved speaking
grades. In short, the trip was a
great success due to the enthusiasm
of the students and the efforts of Mrs.
Siani and Mr. I Lasevoli.
The Eighth Squad reports the
details of a First Degree Robbery in
Levittown sometime between 7:30 and
8:00 p.m. tonight.
The victim, Adam Frost, 19, of 5
Hamlet Rd., was accosted by three
white males in front of his house, who
ordered him to get into his car a 1969
Oldsmobile Cutlass, at rifle point.
Two of the suspects also got into
Adam's car, while the third got into
a green van. Both vehicles then drove
off, one suspect driving the van and
the two others in Frost's car with
Adam in the back seat.
Adam was finally released, unhurt,
in the rear of the Pergament store,
on Hempstead Tpke., Bethpage,
where he called the police.
The three suspects are described as
three white males.
