Cries of "Tippecanoe and Tyler
Too" will echo through the streets
of Old Bethpage Village Restoration
when the presidential campaign of
1840 is re-created on Saturday and
Sunday, July 22 and 23 from 2:30
to 4:00''P.M.
Ihe program will get underway
at 2:30 P.M. as the loyal followers
of President Van Burcn stage a rally
at the village crossroads. Democratic
party leaders will present a
series of resolutions outlining their
candidate's platform.
At 3:00 P.M. the supporters of
William Henry Harrison and John
Tyler, the vice presidential candidate,
will hold a Whig party rally
complete with speeches, signs and
the gimmickry which characterized
the "Log Cabin and Hard cider"
campaign of 1840, including miniature
log cabins and lively campaign
songs. "Tippercanoe" was the knickname
tagged onto William Henry
Harrison after he led a troop of
crack U.S. soldiers against the
Indians at the Battle of Tippercanoe
Creek on November 6, 1811. Harrison's
followers called him an
Indian fighter and a frontier man
raised in a log cabin, and introduced
miniature log cabins into the campaign
to cmphasi/e the idea. In
actuality, Harrison was raised in
Virginia, the son of an aristocratic
family.
