emergency response team of the
Bethpage Volunteer Fire Department:
the Fire Police Unit. On February 16,
1989 the Fire Police Unit was organized
and began to operate on a trail
basis. On Sunday, July 30 the 14
members of this unit were officially
sworn in by Oyster Bay Town Clerk
Carl Marcellino at Bethpage Fire
headquarters.
Many people do not understand
what the Fire Police do. Our Fire
Police are veteran members of the
Bethpage Fire Department. During
Fire Police act as duly sworn Peace
Officers (as per Section 209-c of the
General Municipal Law). Their duties
include the regulation of traffic,
control and protection of the general
public at emergency scenes, safeguarding
fire apparatus and property,
cooperating with all law enforcement
agencies and enforcing all laws pertaining
to firematic activities.
The training of Fire Police personnel
includes a course given by the
Nassau County Fire Service
Academy. This course covers personal
conduct, responsibilities, liabilities,
traffic direction and applicable laws.
The Chiefs of the Bethpage Volunteer
Fire Department feel that the Fire
Police Unit has already proven itself
to be an asset to firefighting
operations.
Members of the Fire Police Unit
include: Captain Cliff Reichardt, First
Lt. Bill Volkle, Second Lt. Lou
Levien, Ron Galente, Bill Ellinger,
Rudy Fikar, Fritz Kerpa, Joe Miron,
Frank Noe, John Hajdusek, Harold
Anderson, Tony Marciano, Hans
Siewertsen and Adam Jankowski.
'Music Under the Stars' at Bethpage Community Park
A performance by the North Shore
Pops will highlight the sixth and final
week of "Music Under the Stars"
programs for Bethpage Community
Park District residents, according to
Town Councilwoman Ann R. Ocker.
The program will be held at the
community park on Thursday,
August 17, beginning at 8:15 PM. In
the event of rain, the performance will
take place in the auditorium of
Bethpage High School, Cherry and
Stewart Avenues.
"In the three short years since it was
formed, the North Shore Pops has
become one of the most in-demand
performing groups on Long Island,"
Mrs. Ocker said. "Comprising professional
musicians, teachers, students
and dedicated amateurs, the group has
a repertoire that encompasses the
classics, popular , contemporary and
Broadway show tunes."
Selections for this performance,
which is partially funded by the
Nassau County Office of Cultural
Development, will include "The Star
Spangled Banner," "American Overture,"
"The Devil's March," "Procession
of the Sardar" and "Bugler's
Holiday" as well as tributes to John
Philip Sousa, Cole Porter and Jerome
Kern.
Mrs. Ocker noted that the "Music
Under the Stars" series is being
sponsored by the Cultural and Performing
Arts (CAPA) Division of the
Town's Department of Community
and Youth Services. Foi further

Graduate Wins
$24,000 Grumman
Scholarship

Bethpage, July 26. 1989 ... Joe Yum
Chan, a 1989 graduate of Bethpage
High School, has won a S24,000
Grumman Science and Engineering
Scholarship.
The award included S6,000 a year
for four years toward tuition at any
accredited engineering college Chan
chooses. In addition, Chan will have
a summer job at Grumman throughout
his college career and a guaranteed
job offer from the company upon
graduation.
Grumman annually awards 12 such
scholarships. This year, six went to
dependents of Grumman employees
and six to non-dependents. Ten of the
winners were from Long Island and
two from off-Island sites where
Grumman has facilities. As always,
graduates from public and private
high schools were eligible to compete
Chan finished 10th in his class of
225 .students. In addition to his high
academic ranking, he had a well-rounded
high .school career, being
active in many extracurricular
activities.
To compete, students must also
have SAT scores of at least 1200 and
be in the top 20 percent of their class.
Chan is the son of Sai-Fun Chan,
a systems engineer at IBM in Jericho
Plaza, and his wife Alice.
