Rumors of Grumman
Development Clarified
During the past few weeks the
Bethpage Tribune has received numerous
inquiries as to the development
plans of the Grumman Corporation
located in Bethpage. Rumors of low
income housing and apartment complexes
were just some of the scuttlebutt
that had been brought to our
attention. So we decided it was time
to clear up all the misconceptions and
find out exactly what type of development
the Grumman Corporation is
planning.
When speaking with Miriam Reid,
News Bureau Manager of the Grumman
Corporation, she told the Tribune
that by no means is Grumman
interested in any type of housing, be
it low income or luxury housing. Reid
said that Grumman's interest lies
solely in commercial development.
Presently there is a conceptual plan
for GRUMMAN PARK, an office
park complex that would be erected
on a 200 acre piece of property
consisting of approximately 3.625
million square feet of office use,
175,000 square feet of warehouse use,
100,000 square feet of retail use and
400 conference center/ hotel and motel
rooms. The total proposed development
includes conversion or replacement
of 800,000 square feet of existing
Grumman facilities located at buildings
1, 4 and 25. Office and retail uses
have 5 parking spaces per 1,000 square
feet of space.
Miriam Reid told the Tribune that
these plans are still in their infancy
and that they were submitted to the
Town of Oyster Bay to give them some
idea of the type of office complex
Grumman is interested in developing.
Reid told us that nothing is etched
in stone and that all plans would have^'
to go through all Town channels to
receive the proper approval and
permits.
The Toast' of the Town
Bethpage can raise it's glasses with
pride in knowing that our town has
been rated as having the best tasting
water in Nassau county and the second
best in southeastern New York.
The drinking water contest, which
was sponsored by the Long Island
Water Conference during National
Drinking Water Week, involved over
20 Nassau county localities and was
initiated to promote public awareness
as to the safety and quality of
the water in our county. The judging
was done by randomly chosen indi-viuals
at a White Plains" shopping
mall.
Bethpage's Water District, which is
headed by Sal Greco Jr., along with
the entire town, takes pride in this
impressive victory. In fact, after taking
second place in southeastern New
York, Bethpage went on to place third
in the Statewide Drinking Water
Competition held in August.
So drink up and enjoy, Bethpage's
water is 'quite a mouthful!'

Hazardous Material Spill
in Bethpage
Pictured above are two members of the HAZMAT crew, Jim Siviglia (I.)
and Bob Scarabino (r.) as they examine the UPS package that contained
the leaking chemicals. GAIL KELLY PHOTO
Tuesday, September 12, 1989 a
United Parcel Service driver was
injured while making a delivery to
Autodyne at 271 Broadway in Bethpage
when the package he was delivering
began to leak its contents.
Mark DiLorenzo, 33 was about to
make his delivery to the Bethpage
engineering and manufacturing company
when a case of six one gallon
ontainers of solvent began to leak on
his right shoulder, arm and hand. The
solvent which contained the potentially
lethal chemical methylene chloride
caused burns and irritation to the
UPS driver's arm and face.
Methylene chloride can be fatal if
inhaled in a confined area and is
considered a relatively dangerous
chemical, which necessitated Deputy
Fire Chief, John Fitzwilliam's call to
the Emergency Service HAZMAT
(Hazardous Materials) Unit. Two
HAZMAT members Jim Siviglia and
Bob Scarabino equipped with tyvek
suits, masks and oxygen examined the
spill and secured the area in order to
make it safe. The material was
removed for disposal by the Marine
Pollution Control Company, a private
environmental clean up company
hired by United Parcel Service.
An investigation is being conducted
to determine if any violations were
committed by UPS in delivering the
chemical, as there were no labels of
any kind on the UPS parcel indicating
the chemical percentage ratio of the
solvent which was being transported.
This issue of THE BETHPA GE TRIBUNE is dedicated to the memory
of our beloved friend LEO SCHOTTLAND.
