The Historical Society of Bethpage
met on Wednesday, February 15 to
discuss the objectives of the organization
for 1989. High on the list of projects
is a documentary video for use
in our schools as an education tool.
The video will also be available to the
public.
Of course, in order to make this
video a success, information from all
areas is needed. If you have any type
of memorabilia, photographs, old
home movies (of parades, picnics, etc.)
or just want to tell some stories of
community events, please contact the
society at P.O. Box 178, Bethpage.
Send your name, address and phone
number and we will get in touch with
you. If you feel that your mementos
will get lost, we can come to your
home and photograph or catalog them
so that they are never out of your sight.
We hope you will have as much
interest in this project as we do.
The 'I Remember When' columns
are dwindling down to nothing. In
order to keep this column published
on a regular basis, we'need input from
you. Again, if you need help putting
your thoughts into words, let us know.
A reminder . . . your 1989 dues are
due and payable NOW. Please see Al
Procida and take care of that. If you

Mr. B. Jaeger, Principal of John F. Kennedy Junior High School, left,
congratulates Marc Weitzman.
Marc Weitzman, a seventh grade
student at John F. Kennedy Junior
High School, recently competed in
five skating events at the Annual IS IA
team competition. During this competition,
held from January 23-26 at
Lake Placid, Marc competed in five
events, winning four gold medals and
one bronze medal. These events
included a team competition (gold),
figures (bronze), ice dancing (gold),
freestyle (gold), and spotlight-interpretive
(gold). These outstanding
achievements have earned Marc an
invitation to the Empire State Games.
Marc aspires to one day compete in
the Olympic Games.
In recognition of his achievements both in and out of the classroom, Bethpage
High School Senior Thomas Rousakis was recently named an EAB/News
12 Scholar Athlete. The Award is presented to Long Island students for their

and service to others.

Special Use Permit For Billiard
Room in Bethpage Denied
A request for a special use permit
to operate a billiard game room in
Bethpage has been denied by the
Oyster Bay Town Board, according
to Town Councilman Howard T.
Hogan, Jr.
"The applicants, P.J. Que Club Inc.
and Summix Realty Co., were seeking
a special use permit to operate a billiard
game room in the US-1 Shopping
Center located on Hempstead
Turnpike east of Hicksville Road,"
Hogan stated. '*The property is situated
in a *G* general business district,
and is also identifi^ as 4031-4035
Hempstead Turnpike, Bethpage.
**Pur8uant to a public hearing hcM
on November 22, 1988, at which a
number of residents voiced their
opposition to the application, the
Town Board has decided it is not in
the best interests of the surrounding
area to allow the billiard room to
operate,** Hogan continued. "Among
the reasons the Board cited for denying
the request were disruption of the
health, pea(%, quiet and comfortable
enjoyment of life and property of
nearby residents, incompatibility with
the residential character of land to the
north and the fact that the panting
of the application would impede
future ^ o r t s to stabilize the general
use md diaracter of ti» area.**
