New federal regulations requiring
the removal of a bacteria that appears
only in surface water sources such as
reservoirs will not apply to the
Bethpage Water District nor any other
Long Island supplier, said Mr.
Krumholz. All of Long Island
receives its water from deep underground
aquifers.
"The parasite in question, Giardia
lamblia, does not exist in our water
supply system," said Mr. Krumholz.
"You can be assured that the water
coming from your tap is absolutely
clean and safe to drink."
To guard against this illness-causing
parasite, New York City and other
locales that are supplied by reservoir
may have to install costly filtering
systems. Fortunately, the trillions of
gallons in Long Island's, aquifers have
been naturally filtered over a period
of several decades through the Island's
porous underground layers.
Long Island water suppliers already
meet the most stringent monitoring
Grumman Jumps Ship
iii^i
and treatment standards in the nation.
They are required to test for more than
230 parameters four times annually
and must not allow the organic
compounds in the supply to exceed
five parts per billion. The test results
are reported to the county health
departments, which also conduct
regular spot checks.
"The Bethpage Water District exists
to serve you and your family," said
Mr. Krumholz. " A safe, healthy water
supply is our constant and only
concern."
The Bethpage Water District is a
member of the Long Island Water
Conference. Established in 1951, the
Conference consists of water supply
system. Conference members included
major water suppliers^i both public 4md
private, on Long island, consulting
engineers, attorneys, manufacturers
and contractors associated with water
supply, as well as officials of various
governmental regulatory agencies.
On Tuesday, March 20, the Grumman
Corporation headquartered in
Bethpage announced that after four
decades the company was abandoning
their boat production business. Outboard
Marine Corp. reached an
agreement with the Aerospace corporation
to acquire the Boats Division
of the Corporation. No purchase price
was disclosed.
Although the Grumman Corporation
is not famous tor their boatmg
division, the Corporation has been
building aluminum boats and canoes
for quite some time.
Grumman officials reported that
last year their boating division contributed
less than 10 percent of the
almost 400 million in sales of special
purpose vehicles which probably
promoted the corporation to abandon
ship.
