It has been said that bad news
travels quickly but good news
travels just as fast and when the
Tribune heard about this story a few
days ago we felt it was just too good
a story and far too touching to pass
up.
A few issues ago we reported about
the Sagamore Chapter of an organization
called the Telephone Pioneers
of America. Since then I have found
out quite a bit about this organi/.ation
and also about the important and
charitable activites of the Pioneers. I
earged Tribune readers to save store
receipts from Finast and King KuUen
supermarkets to help fund the Burn
Unit at Nassau County Medical
Center (a project sponsored by the
group) and your support has truly
been inspirational. Since that plea we
have collected over $7000 in register
receipts, with one percent being
donated to the hospital facility. Quite
impressive and keep 'em coming! But
the Sagamore group does so much
more to help those in need.
In the Spring of 1988, George
Ambrosio, Churchill Fdwards, John
Schwind and Lloyd Harman, Pioneer
Representatives of the Sagamore Life
Member Club, traveled to the Guide
Dog Foundation and chose a cuddly
black Labrador Retriever and named
him Sagamore.
When he was two months old.
Sagamore was pl^ed with his puppy
watcher, Suzanne Saether of St.
.lames. For the next ten months,
Suzanne and her family worked to
prepare Sagamore for his future as a
guide dog. Besides learning house
manners, he took many walks in
