YOUR OFFICIAL HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER
Serving Bethpage, Island Trees, Plainedge, Seaford, Old Befhpage and Plainview
VOL. 23 NO. 44 Celebrating Our 23M Year Sept«mb«r 13-19, 1990 Gelebrating Our 23rd Ya ar 25 CiNTS
The Central Park Historical Society
of Bethpage was chartered as a
nonprofit educational organization by
the New York State Education
Department in January, 1990. The
society sought a logo which would
depict the history of Bethpage at a
glance.
THE NAME CIRCLE
The outer circle of the logo traces
the names of our hamlet. Central Park
was the name given by land developers
in the 1850's to this part of the
Bethpage Purchase, previously known
as Jerusalem Station. In the absence
of rail lines on the north and south
side of the island, our hamlet, located
in the central part of the island
serviced surrounding communities
among them Jerusalem, as Wantagh
was known. Realty developers felt that
this area should be identified independently
and not be considered an
extension of Jerusalem.
Progressing along the name circle,
one approaches the present name of
our community, Bethpage, which was
renamed in 1936 as noted on the tree.
The tree allows us to perceive how
deeply religious the earliest settlers of
the Bethpage Purchase were. It is
symbolic of a fig tree located in the
Biblical town of Bethpage located on
the Mount of Olives as related in the
Gospels according to Matthew, Mark,
and Luke.
THE FRONTIER CIRCLE
The Central Park Historical Society
of Bethpage is sponsoring the First
Annual Bethpage Day on Saturday
October 6th, 1990. Thousands of
celebrants are expected to participate
in this event. The parade, scheduled
for 10 A.M., will feature thirty
organizations, several marching
bands, antique cars and floats. Following
the parade, festivities will
commence at the Bethpage Community
Park, Stewart Ave., Bethpa^.
Town Supervisor Angelo DelUgatti,
will present the Proclamation to the
people of Bethpage. More than thirty
community organizations will sponsor
booths where food, mementos and flea
market items will be sold. Entertainment
will continue throughout the
afternoon until dusk and will feature
the Nassau County Police Department
Blue Lions performing Pops
tunes, the Long island Banjo Society,
and a locally known Rock group,
Christine and the Razors. Normals
School of Dance and the St. Martinis
Players will also perform. Boy Scouts,
PAL, and various sports organizations
will put on demonstrations.
Other events will include an ongoing
raffle of prizes donated by the
Bethpage merchants, such as IW)
gallons of fuel oil by Greco Bus, a
catered party for 25 people by Bret-ton's
Deli, a basket of cheer by
Babylon Wine & Liquor Store and
evening use of a limousine and
complimentary champagne by Ultimate
Class Limousine and a 27** Color
TV donated by the Grumman Corporation.
Tickets for the raffle can be
purcha^sed from any merchant or any
member of the Historic Society. A
limited edition ol l shirts imprinted
with the newly unveiled Logo oi the
Central Park Historical Society will
be sold by the Historical Society along
with Historical Postcards depicting
scenes of the Central Park phase of
early Bethapge.
Engine 39, the last steam locomotive
to pass through Bethpage, symbolizes
the importance of the LIRR
to Bethpage which at one time was
a frontier in the eastward movement
of people on Long Island. It enabled
early residents to work in the city and
raise their famihes in this park-like
hamlet.
The Lunar Expedition Module
(LEM) designed and constructed by.
the Grumman Aerospace Corporation
of Bethpage established a new
frontier for bethpage. Just as the
railroad reached eastward in the
1800's, the LEM reached for the moon
in the 1900's achieving a "giant step"
for mankind.
As summarized by Daniel Schia-vetta,
the first President of the Central
Park Historical Society of Bethpage,
"No place in the world is there a
country or village which can claim the.
only structure on the moon but
Bethpage.''
DESIGNED the LOGO
Many members of the Historical
Society contributed to the ideas and
scenes depicted in the Logo. From the
initial drawing of the concept by Bob
Albertson, it passed through many
stages in reaching completion. Ernest
Finamore, an old time Bethpage
resident, combined all these efforts
and designed the final copy of the
Logo. Many thaiiks to him and all
the others for a job well done.
Flag Burning Ceremony
On Saturday, October 13, 1990, at
11:00 AM, Archie McCord Post #86
has scheduled a flag-burning ceremony,
to be held outside the Legion Hall
at 10 Washington Street {actually in
the LIRR parking lot adjacent to our
Legion Home).
We are asking citizens of Bethpage
who have old or unserviceable American
flags to bring them to the
ceremony, so they may be destroyed
with the dignity and respect they
deserve.
This is a solemn ceremony and,
normally, a very private ceremony.
But in light of the recent Supreme
Court rulings that tlag-burning as a
protest is a "right" of free especch, we
members of Archie McCord Post #86
have unanimously agreed that it is
most appropriate at this time to make
a public statement, and to lake a firm
stand, on this subject.
Town Authorizes Negotiation and Sale of
Plainview Property
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor I
Angelo A, Delligatti today announced |
that the Town Board has authorized i
the Town Attorney to commence |
actions to bring about the negotiation |
and sale of the Town owned 65-acre j
site in Plainview. i
According to the Supervisor, the j
Board's action follows the issuance j
earlier this year of a request for
proposals (RFP) to purchase the
property. '*The single proposal that
was received," said the Supervisor,
"was found to be non-responsive to
the RFP aiid was, therefore, rejected."
The Town Attorney will now
pursue, with the assitance of outside
council, a negotiated sale of the site, i
which is adjacent to the north service
road of the Long Island Expressway
and is zoned for light industry.
