n Tuesday, Februai^ 27 the
Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce had its first
meeting at the Bethpage
Public Library at 7:30 p.m. Chairing
the meeting were Gary Bretton of
Bretton's Deli and Dennis Brady of
Jacques Catering who have been
trying to develop a chamber of this
type in Bethpage for quite some time.
Basically, this first meeting was held
to receive imput from the twenty-five
plus merchants of Bethpage who
attended the meeting and see how they
felt about organizing this type of an
association.
The response was quite favorable
by all those in attendance. In general
most merchants felt that it was high
time that Bethpage formed a Chamber
of Commerce and began to pull
together to better our town.
Three committees were formed, one
to set up By Laws which are critical
to an association of this type, a
Membership Committee, which will
serve to strengthen the chamber and
a Community Service Committee to
establish what specific goals and or
problems the Chamber of Commerce
should be dealing with. At future
: t
m^tings the Chamber plans to elect
officers, set up a dues schedule and
pinpoint the specific areas of interest
which they plan to deal with.
Some topics which were highlighted
on Tuesday night were the up and
coming Bethpage Day Celebration,
holiday decorations for the Town, the
problem of vandalism in our streets
and accessible parking for patrons in
Bethpage.
Gary and Dennis earged every
merchant present to inform their
fellow merchants and business owners
to join the Chamber of Commerce.
They made it clear that no one who
operates a business in Bethpage will
or should be excluded. "It is important
for everyone to come together and
instill pride in our Town said Bretton,
Bethpage needs this.*'
Dennis Brady has set up a schedule
of meetings which will be held at the
Bethpage Public Library on Monday
nights at 7:30 p.m. The following
meeting dates are March 5, March 19,
April 12 and April 23. The Tribune
will keep you informed as to meeting
dates and agendas of the Chamber of
Commerce. Get involved and participate
in this important association.
'Save Receipts' and Help
Medical Center Burn Unit
"Save the Receipts," a project
started by the Telephone Pioneers of
America is a fund raising program for
the Nassau County Medical Center
Burn Unit. By saving cash register
receipts from King Kullen and Finast
Supermarkets you can contribute to
the equipment and operations of what
many have said is one of the best Burn
Units in the County. When $1000.00
is collected in receipts the super
markets will donate 1% of the receipts
to the Burn Center, So far the
Telephone Pioneer have collected
$16,570.49 in receipts. Much thanks
should be given to the all The Telephone
Pioneers and Dorothy Bailie
who brought this fundraising project
to Bethpage, Dotty told her coworkers
at Photonews Long Island
Corporation in Bethpage about the
fundraiser and so far they have
collected $1500.00 plus in receipts for
this worthwhile cause. Keep up the
good work girls!
If anyone is interested in participating
in this fundraiser or if you have
King Kullen or Finast receipts to
donate mail or bring them to The
Tribune Office at 329 Broadway and
be a part of this important project.
Friends of the Bethpage Library
As many of you know, last year
marked the passing of one of the
Bethpage Public Library's most
devoted supporters, Leo Schottland.
Leo's dedication and service to the
library were perhaps most visible
through his lealdership of the Friends
of the Bethpage Public Library. This
organization ha» been resfN»»tibie for
many events, including the Annual
Book Sale and the Flea Market.
The renewal of this vital organization
is a unique and fitting way to
honor the memory of Leo Schottland.
To this end, you are cordially invited
and urged to attend a reorganization
of the Friends of the Bethpage Public
Library to be held on Thursday,
March 8, at 8:00 P.M. in the library.
Refreshments will be served.
