BETHPAGE FIRE DEPT
RECEIVES NASSAU
COUNTY AWARD
On April 15, 1992 the Annual
Awards Ceremony of the Nassau
County Fire Commission was held
in Uniondale.
The Bethpage Fire Department
received the Emergency Medical
Services Unit Citation. The B.F.D.
was the only department in the
county to receive this
commendation.
This citation was awarded for
actions taken on Jan. 11, 1991 at
the scene of a fatal train/car
accident.
At the height of a snow storm
at 6:07 pm, two B.F.D. ambulances
were responding to a cardiac
emergency. One of the ambulances,
while stopped at the Broadway
railroad crossing, saw flames
on the tracks. An automobile had
been struck by an eastbound
express train. The car was cut in
half and had burst into flames. The
ambulance officer notified the fire
dispatcher, Jim Baudille, then
went to the aid of the victims. The
crew observed two bodies lying
dead in the fresh snow; a nine year
old girl was trapped in the
unburned half of the car.
The twisted metal wreck containing
the child came to rest
within inches of the still energized
third rail. In spite of the blinding
wind driven snow, a very slippery
footing, darkness, the possibility
of explosion and the 700 volt third
rail, the crew of Ambulance 906
carefully removed the seriously
Injured girl from under the car's
dashboard.
Other units of the Bethpage Fire
Department also expertly carried
out their functions. The engine
companies attacked the gasoline
fed fire.' Additional firefighters
searched for victims along the
tracks. The Fire Police Unit re

IB PRTANTNOTICETOA
BETHPAGE RESIDENTS
I hope everyone is well aware of the up and coming School Board
and Budget election which is taking place on June 10. What I don't
think many people realize is how this election and vote effects you
the resident in Bethpage. This vote will effect not only residents with
school age children but every resident in Bethpage who pays school
tax. It seems to me ihat many people just do not get out there and
cast their vote which is why the Bethpage Tribune has decided to
help get people involved. If you are a senior citizen or handicapped
and would like to vote but do not have transportaiton to and from
the polls, we in conjunction with the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
will provide you with transportation .You can register for a ride by
calling 433-0010 and leaving your name, address and phone number.
You then will be called back as to what time your ride will be there
to pick you up. It is so important that all residents get out to vote
and we hope that by providing transportation we can help residents
get involved. We also urge you to read the Tribune for all information
regarding candidates as well as budget information. Educate yourself
and make a wise vote on June 10. Apathy is the most damaging viliian
of any community.
