REMEMBER AND HONOR THEM
Memorial Day
Every veteran (and every American) should read the article in the
April 1988 American Legion Magazine called "Vets A Drag The
Budget?" It was written by Charley Reese, a syndicated columnist
from Florida, who admits to being "a barefoot kid in a sleepy Georgia
Town" during World War II. He wrote, among other things:
"My childhood was safe because these men put their bodies and
their lives between me and two powerful war machines intent on
destroying this nation."
What Charley says about the veterans of World War 11 Is just as
true of the veterans of the First World War, two decades earlier, when
our men served and fought and died to keep freedom alive. It's just
as true.of the veterans of the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, when
our men served and fought and died to preserve freedom in the face
of communist aggression. Each and every one of these veterans "put
their bodies and their lives between..."
Many made the ultimate sacrifice....and it is those whom we
remember especially on Memorial Day. They "put their bodies and
their lives between"....and all of us, every free American, should
remember and honor them...every day, and not just on Memorial
Day...because every day, in every state of the union, the very ground
we walk on is free ground, belonging to a free people...free because
of the Supreme Gift of these veterans.
So remember, honor the memory of those v^ho served and fought
and died so that freedom would live on. Remember those who died
in the Argonne Forest, and on the beaches and in the hedgerows of
Anzio and Normandy, and in the bunkers and foxholes along the Yalu
River and in the jungles of Vietnam.
Remember a beach called Omaha...strewn with the bodies of those
who "put their lives between." Remember the 141 unarmed soldiers
mowed down by heavy machine gun fire from the tanks of the 1st
SS Panzer Division in a field near Malmedy in Belgium. Remember
and honor the stick of paratroopers, 14 in all, who landed far from
their drop zone in Carentan..disarmed, massacred, and thrown into
a common unmarked grave. Remember and honor the men of Company
