25 CENTS
April 6 brought hundreds of
people to the Bethpage High
School Gymnasium for the Fourth
Annua! Jason Silver Volleyball
Game. This game, as most of you
already know, benefits Jason
Silver, a Bethpage High School
student and resident who was
struck by a car and incurred
serious debilitating head injuries.
The volleyball game was the brain
storm of BHS Alumni Anne Mar-rone
who decided that something
had to be done for Jason and his
recovery effort.
Anne said, "People ask me why
1 devote so much time to this
tournament and Jason. Well, the
answer was quite clear
when I spoke to Mrs. Silver
recently and she told me that they
are the luckiest family in Bethpage.
I questioned her and asked
her why after Jason's tragedy did
sheconsiderherfamily lucky. Well
what she said truly is the reason
why I get involved and so many
others join me. She said that the
entire community of Bethpage has
adopted Jason and that everyone
is behind them 100%. She said that
it so heartwarming to know that
they are not in this battle alone but
that they are loved and prayed for
And Mrs. Silver is right. Jason
is loved and supported by many
residents as well as some 28 teams
which partook in this year's event.
Jason's condition is getting better
each day and he is progressing
quite steadily since his accident
some 4 years ago. And what has
these volleyball games accomplished.
Well they partially paid for
the special wheelchair which
Jason uses every day as well as
a table at the Silver home which
he also uses frequently. They have
provided Jason with many apparatuses
which enable him to remain
home with his family...^at home
where he has made the most
progress and has remained in
good health throughout the entire
winter.
We at the Bethpage Tribune
commend all those Involved in the
tournament and hope that very
soon Jason will not only be able
to play but also be able to donate
all of his special equipment to
someone who needs it. Bethpage
truly is a wonderful place to
live....a town that helps its fellow
residents and sticks together. !
think we all very much like the
Silvers are lucky to be a part of
such a community.
TOB To Participate in
ite Week Conferenee
A representative form the Town
of Oyster Bay will be among the
guest speakers at the Long Island
Group Commute Week Conference
scheduled for April 20th,
according to Town Councilman
Leonard Kunzlg.
"Since the passage by the Oyster
Bay Town Board of New York
State's first Transportation Management
Ordinance (TMO) in
May, 1991, the Town has become
a recognized leader In the field of
transportation management,"
Councilman Kunzlg stated. "Gary
Pappas, Deputy Commissioner of
the Town's Department of Intergovernmental
Affairs, which is
administering the TMO, will discuss
the Town's Ordinance and
what has been done to date to
implement the legislation."
The Town's TMO Is aimed at
relieving traffic congestion on the
public highway system and assisting
major private sector employers
within the Town to comply with
mandates imposed on them by the
1990 federal Clean Air Act Amendments.
Soon after adopting the
TMO, the Town Board took one
of the first steps toward implementing
the legislation with the
creation of a Transportation Commission
to coordinate the Town's
efforts to improve traffic conditions
and serve as liaison to the
private sector for transportation
issues.

From September until even last week, as I walk through the halls
of Bethpage High School I can always see them. With their radio,
stretching, running and then finally practicing their routines. They
might get home long after the other teams have left. Their competitions
can be very early in the morning or late at night. No matter what
time, they had better be smiling and awake! They have the longest
season of any team in the school. They must be both athletes and
entertainers. They are of course The Bethpage High School Kickline.
Known to many as the "Golden Girls." Is ail of this dedication and
work worth it? Well, with four first place trophies sitting on the counter
of the school main office, an undefeated record for the year, and
winning the Long Island Championship, therefore becoming the
Champions of Long Island, I think it's worth it all.
I also think that each and everyone of the Golden girls should be
extremely proud of themselves for being the best. And for making
both the school and community very proud. Hats off to coach Liz
Gerkin for a job well done and to Fred Cohen for all of his dedication
and time to the team as an advisor. Listed below are aH of the fabulous
Golden Girls.
