T.O.B. MAKES COMMITMENT
TO CLEANER AIR
In keeping with its ongoing
commitment to protecting tlie
environment, the Town of Oyster
Bay will now be using cleaner-burning
ethanol gasoline on all
Town-owned (non-diesel) vehicles,
according to town Councilman
Douglas J. Hynes.
Hynes said the Town, which
received its first delivery of ethanol
from Northville Industries last
week, will continue to be a leader
in the fight to protect its
environment.
"Oyster Bay residents need to
know that business and government
are doing everything they
can in this area," Hynes said.
"When federal legislation indicated
that the use of oxygenated
fuels help reduce carbon monoxide
pollution, we were anxious to
move ahead with converting over
to the use of ethanol."
According to Councilman
Hynes, Northville's ethanol, a
blend using corn and alcohol, not
only reduces carbon monoxide
emissions by 25 percent, but
impacts positively on the environment
in many other ways.
"Ethanol is a renewable fuel
source produced from grain and
can actually reduce global warming,"
Councilman Hynes said. "In
addition, ethanol, which costs no
more than conventional gasoline,
can replace octane enhancers in
gasoline like lead and benzene
without their toxic health effects."
All nineteen car makers selling
vehicles in the United States
approve the use of ethanol
blended gasolines and its use
doesn't require any changes to
your automobile. "The only
changes wi\l be in the results of
cleaner air and less consumption
of petroleum,' Hynes said, "and
that will help reduce America's
energy dependence."
Councilman Hynes said he is
proud the Town is teaming up with
Long Island's own Northville
Industries in the fight for cleaner
air. "Northville's innovative development
and use of renewable,
cleaner-burning ethanol blended
fuels, is a commendable endeavor
that will result positively on the
environment," Hynes said. "I am
equally proud that the Town of
Oyster Bay is a municipality that
fuels all its non-diesel vehicles
with ethanol."
