TOWN HOLDS
BOARD MEETING
Resident Given Chance to Meet
Supervisor Yevoli and Discuss Issues
On Thursday April 9 The Town
Board held a "Meet Your Town
Supervisor" evening meeting at
Bethpage High School. Present
were Supervisor Yevoli, Council-persons
Kunzig, Hynes, Symons
and Ocker, Town Clerk Carl Mar-celllno
and a LIRR representative.
The audience asked questions
on a wide range of subject and
voiced a number of concerns and
for the most part the Board were
prepared to answer in detail.
If you attended the meeting you
would have learned that the trailer
on Haypath & Lent Drive is a town
trailer to aid in the installation of
sidewalks; Sort truck license
plates are not town paid vanity
plates; Landscapers are not permitted
to blow leaves on neighbors
lawns address complaints to Carl
Marcellino Town Clerk; The trees
that have been cut down to five
feet in the number streets will be
replaced with new trees, they had
to be removed because the new
curbs installed has weakened the
roots creating a hazzard in stormy
weather. To avoid tipping the trees
over they were shortened until
new trees can be planted. Assemblyman
Fred Parola was in attendance
and fielded questions
regarding the smell from Occidental
which has been determined
to be non toxic, however, Parola
promised further testing. The
eyesore at Powell Ave and Broadway
is being addressed by the
town Attorney and Councilman
Len Kunzig is spearheading a plan
to rezone the parcel for privately
funded senior citizen housing.
Dennis Brady representing
complaints brought before the
Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
asked what can be done about
street peddlers and vendors that
invade the town especially on
holidays undercutting tax paying
merchants. Councilman Hynes
and Symons will look into authorizing
a person to enforce the
town code on weekends and holidays.
In addition the police can
enforce the code & issue summons
to the viofators.
Mike Steinlnger representing
the Central Civic Association cited
his frustration with the L.I.R.R. in
his 6 month long battle to have
fencing repaired and installed in
areas that are accessible to children.
The LIRR representative
exchanged cards with Mike and
promised a followup.
Billy Zura struck a note of
surprise with the Town Board
when he complained of the $50.00
fee charged every three years to
renew a Mother Daughter permit.
Supervisor Yevoli stated that the
process was necessary to police
Conformance. However he felt the
renewal fee appears excessive and
he will look into reducing it.
The only spark of debate arose
when one person brought up
Yevoli's position on the county
layoffs vs raises for town
employees. Briefly on the county
level discussions involved wage
freeze & reduction. While on the
town level Yevoli is looking at a
14% raise for town employees.
Supervisor Yevoli avoided opening
this can of worms and wisely
shifted to topics that would allow
audience participation rather than
hear political debate.
All in all the meeting was an
excellent too! for providing residents
a convenient manner to
voice their concerns directly to
Supervisor Yevoli and the Town
Board. The next evenings meeting
is scheduled for Tuesday April
28th. Call 922-6800 for time and
place.
