SUMMER SUN
SHUT DOWN
On January 16 a Bethpage business
Summer Sun, which operates
as a so called Sun tanning
salon, was shut down and two
women were arrested on various
charges which amounted to 2
misdemeanor counts and 1 felony
count. The arresting officers were
Detectives Anthony Fiore and
Ronald Cianfrogna both of the
Vice Squad.
These type of massage parlor
arrests happen quite frequently
and are very often fronts for
various other illegal operations.
The two women who were arrested
were charged with unlawful practice
of massage, unlawful holding
oneself out as a massage therapist
and prostitution. The first charge
is a felony, as New York State
requires that all persons who
operate these type massage parlors
have a valid massage license.
Just as a doctor is licensing to
practice medicine, massage therapy
is considered an occupation
which requires training and licensing.
The second charge is a type
A misdemeanor and states that
it is unlawful to solicit or advertise
using the word massage if in fact
no one is licensed to perform
massages. The last charge that of
prostitution needs no explanation
and resulted in charging the 2 girls
with a type B misdemeanor.
Although at the time of the arrest
the business was shut down, it is
not known whether the sun tanning
salon has reopened their
doors. Members of the Vice Squad
told us that this salon has been
under close watch for some time
and that there are many of these
type facilities in operation
throughout Nassau and Suffolk
Counties.
