Grumman Opens Manufacturing Center For Super Conducting Magnets
On Monday, September 14, Grumman officially opened a new
manufacturing center in Betiipage for superconducting magnets. The
magnets are a vital part of the Broolchaven National Laboratory's Heavy
Ion Collider, a particle accelerator now under construction at
Brookhaven. Pictured above, from L to R, are Grumman Electronics

Fire Damages House In Bethpage
On Sept. 1?th at about 11:©0 am Bethpage Fire Department received
a call for a fire in the garage at 10 Lynn PI. Dispatcher Jack Meister
informed acting chief Capt. Vincent Valente of multiple calls on the
lire. Upon arrival Capt. Valente found heavy fire coming from the
garage, making Its way to the second floor bedroom. Asst. Chief Pete
Bianco along with other firefighters were hampered by a 100 lb. propane
cylinder and multiple pool chemicals that were stored in the garage.
Bethpage responded with 50 members and mutual aid was received
from Levittown, So. Farmingdaie, Farmingdaie, Plainview Fire
Departments, and Hicksvllie Hazmat. Three firefighters suffered minor
Injuries.
The Grumman Corporation officially
opened its manufacturing
center for superconducting dipole
magnets on Sept. 14. The dipole
magnets will be used In a particle
accelerator at the U.S. Department
of Energy's Brookhaven National
Laboratory in Upton, N.Y.
"This is a good day for Grumman,
for Long Island and for the
country," said Grumman Chairman
Renso Caporali at the ribbon-cutting
ceremony today. "And
.we're very pleased to have the
chance to participate in what will
be one of the technological
hotbeds of the future right in our
own backyard." Over 150 civic and
government leaders attended the
event.
Under a $42.7 million contract
with Brookhaven, Grumman
Electronics Systems Division wilt
build 373 superconducting dipole

Bethpage is a very special community.
It is truly a community in
the sense that It is a place where
people from many walks of life as
well as varied age, economic and
educational levels have come
together in harmony and forged a
COMMUNITY that really works.
Since Its inception, the Bethpage
Public Library has been a
hub of this COMMUNITY. It teems
with activity as old and young with
their varied interests and needs
take advantage of many services;
borrow books, videos, audios and
magazines, and utilize research
and reference materials.
The past ten years has seen a
great change in library services,
materials and programs. Libraries
are no longer for books alone, but
the Bethpage Library zealously
maintains a current book collection
to appeal to all tastes. Up-to-date
reference materials are available
in traditional book form as
well as on Info-Trac, microfiche
and microfilm. Programming for
all ages has been greatly
increased. The Chiidrens Room
provides programs that are boih
educational and entertainuKj on a
year-round schedule with great
emphasis on summer and holiday
activities. From an educational
perspective, it provides support
and enrichment for school assignments.
The Senior population
attends in increasing numbers the
AARP courses, MMTAP couseling
sessions, tax and financial assistance
lectures as well as enjoying
a facility that provides cultural
activities and bus trips without the
hassle of travelling on their own.
The genera! public is well supplied
with choices of craft programs,
film, music and theatre presentations
and lectures on topics of
interest to all.
The Bethpage Public Library
has always striven lo keep pace
with the ever-changing needs of
Its public. The staff is proud to
provide superior service in a
welcoming atmosphere. The community
relies on the library to
stretch its educational, cultural
and recreational horizons. These
days that's not all that needs
stretching. The Library facility
itself is bursting at the searrss.
