graders at Kramer Lane School. Bethpage. place Earth Day
proclamations from Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John W. Burke in
bottles collected by them and fellow students as part of a program to
educate the public about the waste in using disposable bottles and the
need to continue the many fine clean-up projects begun last month.
While teachers picketed
the high school twice in
one week, their leader
expressed both, slight
optimism about
negotiations and strong
dissatisfaction with the
man helping to conduct
them for the board.
"Honor picketing" took
place early this morning,
for the second Thursday in
a row. Such picketing is
limited to pre-school
hours.
The approximately fifty-teachers
who marched,
along Cherry Avenue at
7; 15 a.m. werev^minding
the district that teachers
had not abandoned the
strike option. According to
Jack Murphy, president of
the Bethpage Federation
of Teachers, the faculty
voted 4-1 this Monday
(May 11) to call a strike
vote, should the union
leadership advise it.
Murphy conceded
"some movement" by the
Board since Monday, but
cited a "substantial gap
between Board and
teachers regarding salary
schedules and fringe
R.R. Station Rates
A Beauty Treatment
Although details are not yet
available, Bethpage has been
promised a spring cleaning for its
railroad station.
So reported Mrs. Joan Cable,
president of the Bethpage
Community Advisory Council
and chairman* of the Town. of
Oyster Bay Beautification
Committee.
"After working for over a year
with a representative of the
M.T.A. (Metropolitan Transportation
Authority), Bethpage
is finally going to have its
railroad station given a beauty
treatment," she stated this week.
The "treatment" will include
carpentry repairs, a new »,oa< s£
paint or two, and gt.
refurbishing, added Mrs. Cable.
Calling the "physical appearance
of our station .. . one of
the darkest spots on our community,"
she argued that
"certainly such a focal point as
this, servicing our citizens to a^ '
from the city, as well as gues &
Bethpage, should reflect the
pride and taste of this community."
Colors have already been
submitted, and "in next week's
paper we'll tune you in on the
overall program," she promised.
benefits. There has been
little agreement on non-money
issues, he added.
The union chief also
expressed dissatisfaction
with Al DiMaria, the
Board's professional
n e g o t i a t o r . Murphy
charged that DiMaria had
little knowledge of "how a
school functions." He
singled out class size as an
educational factor the
negotiator allegedly does
not fully appreciate.
Murphy explained that
the teachers wanted to
negotiate with the entire
Board, tae'eause of their
presumed, - greater understanding
of such issues.
Di Maria could not be
reached for comment.
School Board President
Joseph Dawson responded
that the union leader was
"trying to create a false
impression." He pointed
out that the Board's
negotiating team consists
of an administration and a
board representative, plus
t h e p r o f e s s i o n al
negotiator. Admitting that
the Board representatives
have not attended sessions
regularly, Dawson said
that either the Superintendent
of schools or his
assistant had taken part in
all negotiations.
"Who is better qualified
to evaluate educational
matters than the
Superintendent?" asked
Dawson.
The Board president
reported that as of 2:30
Wednesday morning, no
formal request to meet
with the entire board had
come from the teachers.
Unsure whether such a
request was made last
night May 13), he refused
to comment on what his
own reaction whould'be.
However, he speculated
that a few members,
rather than the entire
Board,* might meet with
the teachers in such a
situation.
PICKET PROVERB: Union President Jack Murphy
carries the teacher complaint in a picket line outside
Bethpage high school early this cloudy morning.
Mixed Media Musical
A production of the contemporary
musical "For Mature
Adults Only" will take place at
Holy Trinity Diocesan High
School in Hicksville on May 22,
23. and 24 at 8 P.M. The
Hicksville - Plainview
Ecumenical Council is sponsoring
the production as a benefit
performance for the Social
Enrichment Center in Hempstead.
According to Richard
Koehneke, Vicar of Trinity
Lutheran Church in Hicksville
and executive producer of "For
Mature Adults Only," the play is
"really a multi-media musical
for people of all ages. We'll be
using lights, music, dance,
dialogue, slides, motion pictures,
and set design to convey the
message of the play: the tension
between alienation and reconciliation
in 1970 America. This
tension is felt between individuals,
within the '"Church,
within the society, and between
the races."
Tickets for the production cost
$2.00 and can be obtained in
advance by calling 516-931-2211.
