Uncut Education Budget
HOW ITS-DONE: Susette Jaques, of
coaching front noted Oyster Bey W M W ,
ducting the "Summer Art AT Frescn" series «K-mrg WKM»O. ~—
workshops every Wednesday in August at Human Resources Center,
Albertson, to benefit programs of the Nassau (Caster Seal) Society
for Crippled Children & Adults. The scene here is at the August 5th
workshop on landscape painting, when the group was sent'indoors by
some sprinkles of rain after lunch. Subsequent Wednesday will
feature terra cotta sculpture (Aug. 12); portrait painting from life
(Aug. 19); and a tour of the artist's Oyster Bay painting and sculpting
studios (Aug. 26). To attend one or more sessions, call Easter
Seals at 747-2700. Charge for each Wednesday is $6., plus $1.50 if
participation in companionable barbecue luncheon is desired.
The Bethpage Board of
Education voted Thursday
to resubmit virtually the
same budget which was
defeated during a record
voter turnout two weeks
ago.
The new vote will be
August 27, from 12 noon to
10 p.m. in the high school
auditorium. No hours were
given for registration,
which will be held August
24.
_. Meeting-..for a 'work
"sessioni at «:30 p.m. in the
Administration Building
on Cherry and Stewart
Ave., the Board responded
to the requests of an S.R.O.
crowd and allowed further
public discussion of the
budget.
By 9:15 the Board was
polled. They voted 4-2 in
favor of another vote for a
$10,657,017 budget.
Although this is roughly
$13,000 less than the third
Board proposal, and some
$45,000 less than their first
two budgets, the latest
trimming was the result of
"forced savings" effected
by an austerity operation
during the summer, and
not of a cut in future expenditures.
Board President Joseph
Dawson opened up the
meeting with the expressed
desire to, secure
new information, and
several taxpayers spoke.
One who - presented' a
detailed critique of the
budget was Herman
Slavin, was was allowed a
few minutes to summarize
a several-page report.
Trustee Sol Fink criticized
Slavin for not making his
case at an earlier budget
discussion. Despite some
cheers from the audience
for Slavin, Fink argued
that the Board could not
spend its time covering old
ground.
Other residents expressed
concern over a
tax-rate they felt they
could not afford, and
which the Board assured
them they could not cut.
Others asked whether
sports would be "legal"
under the new budget,
since a certain number of
official school practi<
are required ... for league
competition. They were
told this requirement
would be met by one day if
the new budget were
approved.
Dawson pointed out that
the Board was resubmitting
the budget only as
a voluntary response to a
2,500-signature petition
urging a revote. Although
the petitions asked for a

The Oyster Bay Town
Board approved Tuesday
the rezoning of sites in
Bethpage and Plainedge
that will permit the Town
Housing Authority to
construct an additional 73
housing units for Oyster
Bay senior citizens.
The Board's decision
was made following recent
day and night hearings on
applications filed by the
Housing Authority.
The Bethpage site,
located on the south side of
Burkhardt Avenue, west of
Broadway, calls for the
Construction of 37 dwelling
units in five town house,
two-story buildings. The
Board approved a
rezoning from Business F
to (S-l) Senior Citizens
District at this location.
The Plainedge project
calls for the construction
of 36 units on Hicksville-
Massapequa Road, south
of Merry Lane. The
rezoning decision at this
location involved a change
from Residence D to (S-l)
Senior Citizens District.
The two projects will
cost a total of approximately
$1.7 million
dollars with complete
funding already approved
by the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban
Development (HUD).
Housing Authority officials-
said that many
applications have already
been received from Town
residents living in the area
and they assured nearby
residents that occupancy
would be limited to
residents living' in the
Town for at least two years
with priority being given
to applicants from the
Plainedge and Bethpage
communities.
Besides the residency
requirements, applicants
must be over 62 years of
age, meet certain income
and asset standards and
show a need for this
housing. Rentals will be on
a sliding scale based on
annual income.
Residents have already
begun to move into the
Town's first housing
project which consists of
48 family units and 48
senior citizen units in the
hamlet of Oyster Bay. The
Housing Authority has also
received HUD's approval
for proposals for 140 senior
citizen units in two
Massapequa locations.
Further information and
applications may be obtained
by writing to the
Housing Authority at 125
West Main Street, Oyster
Bay, or by calling 922-7710.
