Inspected by Harwood
Assemblyman Stanley Harwood
(D. Levittown) today inspected
the route that Seaford
children attending Seaman Neck
Elementary School will have to
walk as a result of the bankruptcies
of two Nassau bus companies.
The parents had previously
contracted with, the Crestwood
Bus Comapny for private service.
Now, the youngsters will take a
3/4-mile trek past a junk yard
where rats have been sighted...
down an unpaved street so
narrow that the children are
forced into the traffic on Seaman
Neck Road in spots... across an
overpass above the Seaford-
Oyster Bay Expressway which,
in one spot, has a two-foot gaping
hole in the fence.
Several parents and youngsters!
accompanied Harwood on the5;
walk, pointing out the danger
spots. One mother said the ice\
and snow is never cleared from *
the overpass during the winter.
Another spoke of the recent
assault of two young girls along
the route near the junk yard. "
Harwood advised the parents to
quickly petition the School Board
(Levittown) for school bus service,
and promised to contact the
State Highway Department
which is responsible for the
maintenance of the overpass.
The children involved live on
Flower Lane, Greentree Drive
and Eastview and Centerview
Aves. in Seaford.
• Horatio, did you h e a r ? " "The' North Shore Animal League won the Humane Award.'
The North Shore Animal
League has been presented an
award for its significant contribution
for the past twenty-five
years to the humane cause. This
special award was bestowed by
the American Humane
Association, the national
organization representing over
one thousand humane societies
throughout the United States.
In presenting the. plaque
Rutherford T. Philips, Executive
Director of A.H.A., said: - "The
North Shore Animal League is an
unusual animal shelter. It is
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUIIUII
unique amongthehundredsl have
visited throughout the country. It
is a private, non-profit, volunteer
shelter that cares for homeless
dogs and cats, nurses sick
animals back to health and then
finds loving homes for them.
Most wonderfully, it does not
believe in destroying pets that
are hard to place."
Alexander Lewyt, President of
the League, in accepting the
award, gave special thanks to
Perry Como, Honorary Chairman,
the, officers and directors of
the League, the volunteers and
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniii
the staff.
He added: - "Very special
credit should be given to the
founders who established the
primary principle of not putting
unwanted animals to sleep. Polly,
a half-blind fifteen-year old
Spaniel, who has been cared for
and sheltered by the League for
the past three years is a living
symbol of the League's belief.
She will never be put to death -
she will live out her last. years
happily with us."

Contending that a situation of
"caveat emptor," - let the buyer
leware, exists for the dieting
consumer, Congressman Lester
Wolff last wek urged stronger
federal monitoring to end "get-slim
quackery."
In all day hearings held on fad
diets, food myths and diet pill
abuse, Wolff said:
"The confusion surrounding
the harmful use of indiscriminate
fad diets and diet pills is
monumnetal. The government
must assume the responsibility
for ending this confusion and
setting the dieting consumer
straight as to the pitfalls of
getting caught in the get-slim
syndrome."
Wolff made this comment after
listening to more than fourteen
witnesses offer. testimonies on
these topics.
"It is tragic that the the
nation's consumers can waste
more. than one billion
each year on dad; diets,
equipment and diet pills all in the
hope of instant slimness." Wolff
declared.
"All that seems to follow this
massive expense is greater
personal frustration and
hucksters making an easy dollar
off the unwary consumer. It is
certainly about time that we
ended the fat days of the
proverbial medicine men who
claim they have the solutions to
getting and staying slim", he
addedd.
Wolff also said that he will hold
hearings in Washington D.C. as a
follow-up measure, and that he
plans "to introduce legislation
which would correct the
problems confronting the
nation's dieters, and once and for
all end the traps which the dieting
public faces."
