another aspect of early

"Traditionally, at this time of
year Long Island farm families of
the past would begin their
preparation for the winter",
explained Public Works Commissioner
Edward Borysiewicz
"An important part of this annual
ritual was the preserving of
foodstuffs from recently harvested
crops such as apptes".
The demonstrations, which will
take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21
and 22, will be conducted by

Citizens Help
In Master Plan
Town Supervisor John W.
Burke, striving to achieve
maximum citizen participation in ,
the Town Board's effort to
develop a Master Plan for Oyster
Bay, announced Wednesday that
a survey is to be conducted by the
Town planning consultant.
The planning survey, which
will be in the form of a pre-paid,
mail-back questionnaire, is
designed to develop information
in the areas of housing,
recreation, transportation and
community facilities.
Burke, urging residents to
cooperate by computing and
returning the «pw**onra*re, *w4
that eaeh cttiaen who Wa* -
• received a planning survey has
"an opportunity to participate in
the Town planning effort in a real
and meaningful manner".
The survey is being mailed
without cost to the Town to 10,000
households throughout Oyster
Bay this week by tiie consultant,
Raymond, Parish & Pine, Inc., of
White Plains, N.Y., who will
analyze the results.
Raymond said the questionnaires
were mailed to a random
sampling of Town residents so
that each community will have
an equal opportunity to make
known its needs and desires.
Raymond said the envelopes
and a follow-up reminder postcard
were addressed together, by
machine, and no record will be
kept of the names and addresses.
Thus there is absolutely no way
in which a particular respondent
could be identified, he declared.
The survey is part of the data-gathering
stage in the
preparation of a Master Plan
which will take 18 months to
complete. It is hoped that the
information received will provide
valuable insights into the needs
and desires of residents
correlated to the famUy size, ,
income, journey-to-work,
recreational outlets, shopping
habits and occupations.
Burke assured Town residents
that there will also be other opportunities
for review and
comment by the public, including
meetings with concerned community
organizations, as an
integral part of the planning
process. He anticipated that
meetings with citizens in the
southern half of the Town wdl
commence within one month and
the schedule of, hearings will
progress northward.
Upon completion of
preliminary Master Plan
recommendations, the Town
Board and/or the Planning
Advisory Board will conduet a
second series of public meetings
to enable the consultants again to
incorporate the views of the
general public into the final
Master Plan.
