Simon Cohen , Executive Director, Mid-Island Hospital,
Felled November 25 by Heart Attack,
Simon Cohen, a leading
businessman, philanthropist,
educator and
hospital administrator,
passed away last Wednesday,
November 25, in
Mid-Island Hospital, Beth-page,
of which he was
Executive Director.
Cohen, 63, died of a heart
attack. He lived at 174
Broadway in Lawrence.
A d e d i c a t ed
humanitarian, a wise
counsellor and a selfless
Executive Director, Mr.
Cohen was a self-made
success. He parlayed a
public school education
and a Stuyvesant High
School diploma to become
one of the leading figures
in the industrial and real
estate world.
In recent years, this
philanthropist became
deeply involved with the
entire Farmingdale
\College community. He
served as a member of the
school's Board of Trustees
and among his many
contributions to the school
were the establishment of
a scholarship fund in the
field of nursing and the
Mr. Simon Cob en ..•
initiation of the Farmingdale
College Foundation,"
a benevolent
corporation for assisting
students and faculty
towards further study.
Reflecting the feelings of
the entire college community,
Dr. Charles W.
Laffin, Jr., President of
Farmingdale, said that
"Mr. Cohen's diversified
interest in employee
welfare, improved private
and public education for
the young and old,
provided our school with
one of its great human

with great personal sorrow the passing of our esteemed
executive director and good friend. We extend our

Mr. Cohen was Chairman
of the Hebrew Institute
of Long Island in
Far Rockaway, Queens,
where the Simon Cohen
Auditorium Building was
named in his honor. He
also served as Chairman
of the HILI new $3 million
building program to be
completed shortly and
consisting of 30 new
classes and a library. He
was Vice President of the
Peninsula General
Hospital in Rockaway
Beach, Queens; Treasurer
of the Federation of
American Hospitals, a
non-profit organization;
member of the Mayor's
Committee on Business
Development and Nassau
County Republican Party
organization.
Mr. Cohen showed his
propensity for being
successful very early,
when he became the
proprietor of his own
business at the age of 19.
He established his own
company to manufacture
women's coats and suits.
In World War II, he
* organized and headed the
New York Raincoat
Manufacturers Assoc1
iation, at the request
of Mayor Fiorello H.
LaGuardia, to provide
raincoats for the Army.
After the war, he
became president of Town
and Travel Casuals, Inc.,
