"Child Abuse" Legislation
Urged By State Lawmaker
The horrible and terrifying
incidents of "child sexual abuse"
involving young girls from 3 to 14
years old which came to light this
week on Long Island has
prompted new legislation from
Assemblyman John T. Flack,
Queens Republican-Conservative
and the Legislature's leading
fighter against smut and pornography.
Flack announced today that he
will introduce legislation making
it a crime to advertise in any
media the use or hiring of minors
for so-called "nude photographic
sessions" or for other such activity
which would be used as
Srnographic or. sexually-mutating
material.
The measure stems from the
shocking revelation last week
that several persons in the
Mineola area were operating a
quarter-million dollar nationwide
pornography ring that used
children ranging in age from 3 to
14 for models. The youngsters
were obtained through "ads"
appearing in at least one
publication which offered $200 for
girl models 8 to 14 years old for
nude photographic sessions, and
stipulated that the children
"must have parents consent."
Several arrests were made by
the Nassau County District Attorney
in connection with this
operation and the special Nassau
County Grand Jury has handed
.down a 75-count indictment on the
matter. More arrests and further
investigation of the pornographic
ring are expected. -.
Nassau District Attorney Cahn
was quoted ihthe news media last
week as reporting that the young
girls were photographed participating
in sex acts, and these
photographs were sold
throughout the country. The girls
"were shown engaging in the
most depraved acts of sodomy
and rape" Cahn said.
"Just as shocking as this whole
sordid business," Assemblyman
Flack said, "is the fact that
apparently many so-called
parents from as far away as
Florida brought their child™ to
be used as models and to be used
for these disgusting sex acts.
That is unbelievable."
The Queens Assemblyman
continued: "This depraved
business is almost beyond
comprehension.and yet we find
that these people had a $250,000
business going and it had been
operating for some time. The
idea any person who would call
himself a 'parent' would do such
a thing with innocent children is
sickening beyond belief, and
there are laws on the books to
handle these people.
"However, an operation such
as this would never have been
successful if the ads for the
youngsters had not appeared
in periodicals which can be
purchased on the newsstands in
this state and which are also sent
through the U.S. mails. Would a
periodical be allowed to accept
an ad for a bank robber or a
rapist? Then why should they be
allowed to print ads for purposes
which are just as diabolical?"
"If ever there was reason or
proof why we must wipe out the
smut-peddlers and producers in
this state," Assemblyman Flack
said, "this is it.Those who try to
defend the publication of pornographic
material in the cause
of 'freedom and non-censorship'
had better take a long look at this
type of activity which is going on
in one form or another all over
the world."
iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiii!
He continued: "Where do they
think these periodicals get the
filth and material they print?
And as the freedom to publish
this kind of trash becomes more
permissive, the outlandish forms
of perversion to be depicted will
become worse."
This newest Flack legislation is
just one of a series he has introduced
this year involving the
curbing of sales and'display of
pornographic material in the
state.
Joseph Petrula, chairman of
the Crusade Against Obscenity
and Pornography, said in New
York City that he endorses the
proposed legislation. "It's this

KINDNESS..
is for real
Little Kim Moore, age 4, star of the 1971 "Kindness"
poster, with Charlie her Collie pup, is learning that
"KINDNESS is for real." So will thousands of other
young people - and adults, too - as the North Shore
Animal League of Port Washington launches Be Kind
to Animals Week on Long Island May 2-8.
Be Kind to Animals Week is
being sponsored on Long Island
by the North Shore Animal
League of Port Washington. It
was launched 57 years ago by the
American Humane Association.
Today nearly 1,000 local humane
organizations participate in its
annual observance.
The theme of this special week
"KINDNESS is for real" helps to
stimulate humane attitudes
towards all living things-all year
long. However, it is particularly
directed towards increasing pet
adoptions. Hundreds of animal
shelters throughout the country
are literally jammed with
homeless dogs and cats - pets that
desperately need good homes.
This in spite of the fact that
nearly 60 percent of our home
owners are without the joys and
companionship of a loving dog or
a playful cat.
5,000 merchants, veterinarians,
schools, libraries and houses of
worship are participating by
displaying the colorful "KINDNESS
is for real" poster. Many
houses of worship are making
"kindness" the subject of their
sermons.
