Old Bethpage
PAYING TRIBUTE. The late Simon Gohen of
Lawrence, who until his death was executive director
of Mid-Island Hospital in Bethpage, was recently
honored by the hospital's nursing department and
Congressman John W. Wydler of the Fourth
Congressional District. The nurses erected a plaque
and flagpole in memory of Mr. Cohen and
Congressman Wydler presented the hospital with a
flag that had been flown, also in his memory, over the
U.S. Capitol. The congressman (left) is shown during
the ceremony with Mrs. Dominick Alessi, Director of
Nurses, and Robert Reed, Administrator.

Seek Board Seals Again
Anthony Pfarrer is seeking reelection
to an unexpired term on
the Island Trees Board of
. Education ending June 30, 1971
and a three year term beginning
July 1, 1971. Pfarrer has been a
resident of Levittown for 20 years
and he and his wife, Noel, have
resided at 172 Elm'Drive East for
10 years. They have three sons
attending the Island Trees
Schools.
Pfarrer graduated from
Uelehanty High School in 1951
and received a B. A. degree in
History and Political Science
trom Hofstra ..University in 1955.
" " Nan. d o n e post-graduate work ,
in Labor Relations at C. W. Post
College and New York University.
He served three and one half
years as a First Lieutenant in the
Army with assignments in
"Germany and in Greece where he
was an instructor to the Greek
Army.
Lawrence Berke, President of
the Island Trees Board of
Education has announced that he
will seek reelection to the board.
A 1947 graduate of Brooklyn
Technical High School, Berke
received his B.S. degree from
Brooklyn College in 1956. He has
a Master of Science degree in
Public School Administration and
Supervision from Queens College
and has completed other postgraduate
work, including a N. Y.
Stale Drug Workshop course, at
Hofstra and N.Y.U.
He served as an enlisted man in
the U. S. Army during the Korean
War and worked his way through
college at night while employed'
full time by the New York
Telephone Co. and other firms.
He has been a teacher in the
Karmingdale School District for
the past 14 years and is a member
of the Farmingdale Classroom
Teachers Association.
Berke was an original member
of the District 26 Music Committee.
He has managed a Little
League Team, was President of a
c o m m u n i t y e d u c a t i on

Currently, he is an Employment
Counselor with the
Employment Task Force of the
Nassau County Office of Man-

association, is a former Life
Scout, Assistant Scoutmaster and
a member of the Order of the
Arrow. He has served as vice-president
of Art Forms (a nonprofit
community arts center),
membership chairman of the L.
power Development. He has been
a Personnel Director for
Universal Oil Products Company
and spent nine/years with British
Overseas Airways Corporation
and American Airlines in various
Personnel and - Employee
Relations assignments.
Pfarrer has been active in- Boy
Scouts for several years, serving
as Cubmaster of Pack 356 and
Committee Chairman. He has
been a member of PTA since 1966
and served on the. Education Lay
Committee of the Island Trees
Schools. For a short period, he
* was Coordinator of - the St. James
• Church ^oHt-€hoir.
. He feels. "He has worked hard
" -since, his appointment to the
Board in January" and desires
"to bring his training and work
experience to the point where he
can be the open channel of
communication between parents,
teachers and especially the
students of the community".
I. Camera Club and is a member
of the L. I. Environmental
Council.
In his school board position he
has been a delegate to the N. Y. -
Street School Board's Association
and a member of the Legislative
Action Committee of the Nassau-
Suffolk School Board's
Association for two years.
Berke said he hopes to be
reelected so that he can continue
• to work to preserve the good
reputation and standards of the
Island Trees schools and community.
He is anxious to continue
implementing changes that have
brought about improved communication,
efficiency and
economy in. education. He feels
recent community interest and
participation in various
capacities has proven to be an
asset that he hopes to expand.
Berke and his wife Harriet
have lived at 28 Marksman Lane
lor • 17 years. They have two
daughters now attending the
Island Trees Junior and senior
high schools and a son graduated
from the high school last year.
Muriel Taylor Candidate For Bethpage Library
YOUNG REPUBLICANS: Salvatore Mosca of Bethpage,
Oyster Bay Town's newest Councilman, shakes

Muriel Taylor has announced
her candidacy and submitted her
nominating petition for the office
of Trustee of the Bethpage Public
Library.
Mrs. Taylor summed up her
qualifications as follows: "I feel
thai 1 can bring a wide diversification
of experience,
knowledge and interest to this
position. A trustee must know his
(or her) community. Since
moving here sixteen years ago, I.
have devoted many hours of
service to this community.
During this lime, I have
developed a love and dedication
for Bethpage and the library
which I hope to express effectively
through the office of
Library Board Trustee."
While residing in Bethpage, she
has served in the following
