Grumman LM Carries
First Car To Moon
Apollo 15 astronauts,
Commander (CDR) David
R. Scott and Lunar Module
Pilot (LMP) James B.
Irwin spent twice as much
time on the moon as any
previous astronauts.
Grumman Aerospace
Corporation, prime contractor
to the National
Aeronautics and Space
Administration for the
Apollo Lunar Module
(LM), has modified the
LM which was used on the
mission. Some of the
principle changes or
modifications include
provisions for additional
water and oxygen as well
as increased fuel and
electrical supplies. The
LM also carried with*
in its descent stage
compartments the first
moon car or Lunar Roving
Vehicle (LRV).
ASTRONAUTS LOWER
LRV FROM LM
STOWAGE COMPARTMENT
The two astronauts
participate in the lowering
of the LRV from its
stowage compartment.
The LRV is folded while in
the LM's descent stage,
and is designed to unfold to
its operational configuration
at the end of the
deployment sequence.
LRV UNFOLDS DURING
DEPLOYMENT
While Astronaut Scott
pulls the tapes that lower
the LRV to the surface,
Astronaut Irwin maintains
a constant pull on the
deployment cable to help
the LRV unfold.
ASTRONAUTS COMPLETE
DEPLOYMENT
AND LOAD THE LRV
Scott and Irwin complete
the deployment
sequence by erecting the
remaining LRV components,
including the
seats, and release the
vehicle from the LM.
The deployed.LRV is
about 10 feet long, 6 feet
wide, 45 inches high and
has 7V2 foot wheel base.
Each of the four wheels
are powered by individual
electric motors and both
the forward and the rear
wheels turn for steering.
After the deployment
has been completed, tools,
experiments and other
payload are placed on the
vehicle. Although the LRV
weighs only about 500 lbs.,
it is able to support a total
payload weight of approximately
1000 lbs.,
including the two
astronauts and their life
support equipment.
Therefore, its total weight
on the surface is approximately
1500 lbs.
ASTRONAUTS EMBARK
ON LUNAR EXPLORATION
After completion of the
LRV loading checkout, the
astronauts begin the first
of their three lunar surface
expeditions. Although the
LRV will travel more than
20 miles during the three
traverses, it will never be
more than 5 miles from the
LM. On the first expedition
Scott and Irwin will range
along the edge of Hadley-
