Bethpagers Win All The Prizes
In Merchants' Holiday Festival
by Theresa Spellman
Mrs. Marilyn McMorrow, of
1204 Stewart Avenue. Bethpage,
is a very happy lady these days.
She is the "Grand Prize Winner"
of a ' new Motorola Color TV,
given away as part of the Stewart
Ave. Merchants' Shopping Center
1971 Holiday Festival.
Mrs. McMorrow's first reaction
to winning the television was
one of complete surprise...it
seems she herself didn't fill out a
coupon. Since she has a small
baby at home, she seldom has the
opportunity to shop.
Fortunately her husband,
Charles, filled out a coupon one,
•itfSuf-wiitK' aping-tlte' 'Tarn fly
shopping and forgot to tell Mrs.
McMorrow. The whole household
will be happy now because they
all love to watch television* and
the family's three older children
will now have their "own" tv set.
The 1971 Holiday Festival was
sponsored by participating
merchants of the Stewart Ave.
Shopping Center and by the
BETH-PAGE TRIBUNE.
Directing the Festival was
Publisher. Florence M. Cullem.
'We wanted to do a little 'Extra
area." explained Mrs. Cullem.
"They do much of their shopping
locally and this is the merchants'
way of saying 'Thank You.' The
reaction in the community over
the festival has been one of excitement."
Second prize was an original
framed oil painting by local artist
Mildred Landau and was won by
Theresa Winters, of 93 Hermann
Ave.
Sister Jane Coleman, of St.
Martin of Tours School,
Bethpage, won handmade stuffed
Daisy and Donald Duck toys;
while Annette Morrone. of 121 S.
Sieridan Aye., won a handmade
stuffed elephant, and Mrs.
Domenica Pehnestri. of 141
Sycamore Avenue won the
handmade stuffed octopus.
"It's nice to know all the
winners are from the Bethpage
area." noted Mrs. Cullem.
The drawing was held at the
Reliance Federal Savings and
I-oan Association branch at 572
Stewart Avenue, Bethpage,
where the prizes were on display
for over a week.

comprehensive' annual ever
published in this field with photos
and records and statistical

In the 56 pages of this statewide
publication there are 15 separate
references to Bethpage boys and
their accomplishments and 3
action photos of Bob Ancona and
Bill O'Connell. A full page headed
"Bethpage Balances The Opposition"
identifies Bethpage's
1071 team coached by Fred

• The Town of Oyster Bay will
institute the second phase of its
pilot newspaper recycling .
program on Jan. 10 in the ten
districts selected for this environmental
effort, according to
Supervisor John W. Burke.
Burke said that commencing
Monday, Jan. 3 through Friday.
Jan. 7, special personnel from the
Town's Sanitary Services
Division will .personally contact
homeowners in the test areas and
distribute an educational flyer to
inform each resident about the
new procedures and the
designated day for newspaper
collection in their district. ONLY
those residents contacted by the
special Town crews are to bundle
and tie newspapers for curbside
pickup.
The Supervisor said that the
districts involved in the pilot
program include portions of
Bethpage. Old Bethpage.
Syosset. Massapequa. West
Amityville and the Hicksvrlle-
Levittown area. The informational
flyer is coded for community
identification and pickup
day to effect proper dispatch by
the Town's Sanitary Services
Division.
The basic purpose of the new
procedure is not only to preserve
natural resources, but to prolong
the lifespan of the present landfill
facility by reducing the volume of-refuse
processed at the Town's
incinerators.
Residents participating in the
special area project are
requested to:
1. Bundle newspapers and
place at the curb on the indicated
day.
2. Stack the newspapers not to
exceed twelve inches in height
and tie with cord or string.
3. Place the newspaper bundles
at the curb by 6:30 AM on the
designated day of collection.
The Supervisor said that James
A. Gildersleeve, Superintendent
of the Town's Sanitary Services
Division reminded residents
participating in the pilot
newspaper collection program
that the special pickup applies to
NEWSPAPER ONLY. Other
paper material, i.e.. magazines,
catalogs, cardboard, etc. will be
collected on the regularly
scheduled garbage or rubbish
day.
