Photos-In-The-News i Water Meters Start Ticking
In Levittown-lsland Trees
Following completion of a
three-year $2 million meter installation
project, metered
billing of water consumption in
the.Levittown Water District has
begun, Hempstead Town
Presiding Supervisor Francis T.
Purcell announced.
Installation of the meters was
ordered by the state six years ago
as a water conservation.
Purcell commended the more
than 11.000 residents of the town-operated
water district for their
"tremendous cooperation"
during the installation period.
Previous to the meter project,
Levittown residents paid for
water on a flat rate basis. This
system was weighted against
responsible homeowners who
take their duty to conserve water
resources seriously, explained
Purcell.
The flat rate. system also
resulted in a disporportionately
high tax rate in the Levittown
Water District, a rate that will
ultimately drop as consumers
pay for the exact amount of water
use on a metered basis.
Levittown homes will become
metered in three stages. In each
of the zones the meters will be
read four times a year. In zone
one, bounded roughly by Hempstead
Turnpike on the south,
Newbridge Road on the west.
Jerusalem Ave. on the east and
the Hicksville border on the
north, the initial meter reading
began April 1. The final quarterly
reading will take place the week
of July 1 and metered bills will be
sent out shortly thereafter.
Zone two is bounded by the
Hicksville border on the north
and the Bethpage border on the
east, Jerusalem Ave. on the west
and Abbey Lane and Old Oak
Lane on the south. Meter
readings in zone two will be
conducted initially during the
week of May 1 and finally during
the-weefcof Aug. 1.
Zone three is bounded roughly
by Hempstead Turnpike and
Abbey and Old Oak Lanes on the
north, Loring Road on the west.
North Jerusalem Road on the
south and Springtime Lane and
Wantagh Ave. on the east. In zone
three, meters will be initially
read during the week of June 1
and finally during the week of
Sept. 1.
There will be no necessity for
the meter reader to enter homes
since reading receptacles have
been installed on the outside of '
the homes.
A total of 11,049 consumers
have accepted the meters and
only 103 homeowners have
refused. The holdouts will be
charged at a rate derived by
averaging the highest metered
bills for their zone.
Purcell emphasized that the
meter installation contract will
be in effect until June 30 and that
the holdouts will have until May
15 to accept a meter. Anyone who
seeks a meter-trftcrtho oontract
expires will have to bear the
installation costs individually at
a rate estimated at three times
the contract price.
Library Hopes To "Get It Together"
SUHVEY MOVES ALONG: Despite a later start than
anticipated, driver education students at Bethpage
High School are sticking to their attempt to survey
transit patterns in their community. In the picture
above, Diane Fava (1.) shows the survey form to a
local resident while below, David Lubell, originator of
the project, shows volunteers from the high school
ecology club how to prepare "survival kits" for the
driver education students. Lubell stressed that replies
from interviewed residents would be confidential, once
forms have been checked by telephone canvass. He
said he expected all data to be in within a month.
