ROSH HASHANAH
FESTIVAL OF TRUMPETS
SEPTEMBER 9 10. 1972
Hebrew Date: Jishri 1. 5733
This painting by Morris Katz depicts a rabbi blowing a shofar (ram's horn),
symbolizing God's summons to the people for self-judgement. The sound of
the shofar heralds Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year. This scripture
from The Living Bible is the authority for Rosh Hashanah.
"The first day of the seventh moon) (of the Hebrew calendar) is a solemn time lor all
the people to meet together lor worship; it is a time of remembrance, and is lobe announced
by loud blowing of trumpets. Don't do any work on the day ol the celebration,
but oiler a sacrifice by lire to the Lord."
(Leviticus 23:24-25)
How the Lord said to Moses. "Make two trumpets ol beaten after to be used lor
signaling the breaking of camp. When both trumpets are blown, the people mil know
that they are to gather at the entrance ol the tabernacle. But if only one is Mown, then
only the chiefs of Hie tribes of Israel shah" come to you. Differ enr trumpet blasts will
. be necessary to distinguish between the summons to assemble and the signal to break
camp and move onward. When the travel signal is blown, the tribes camped on 'the
east side ot the Tabernacle shah leave first; at the second signal, the tribes on the
south shall go. Only the priests are permitted to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent
instruction to be followed horn generation to generation. When you arrive in the
Promised Land and go to war against your enemies. God will hear you and save you
from your enemies when you sound the alarm win) these trumpets. Use the trumpets
• in limes nl gladness, too. blowing them at your annual festivals and at the beginning
oleacn month to rejoice over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. And God will
be temiiuled ol his covenant with you. For I am Jehovah, your God'."
(Humbers 10:1-10}
